The Orioles activated Kyle Bradish from the 15-day injured list this morning and he’s starting tonight against the Nationals in D.C.
This is how it was expected to play out, with Bradish returning to the roster on his first day of eligibility.
Bradish lasted 1 2/3 innings in his season debut in Texas before Jonah Heim’s line drive slammed off his right foot. He made a rehab start at Double-A Bowie on Friday and allowed three earned runs in five innings.
Tonight marks Bradish’s first career appearance against the Nationals.
To make room for Bradish, the Orioles optioned reliever Logan Gillapsie to Triple-A Norfolk. Gillaspie appeared in eight games, tied for second on the team, and registered a 7.20 ERA and 2.200 WHIP in five innings.
Ramón Urías has returned to the lineup and is playing second base. He left Saturday’s game in Chicago after being hit in the head by a 96.2 mph sinker.
Cedric Mullins is batting ninth against Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore, with Austin Hays leading off. Jorge Mateo moves up to the sixth spot for the ninth time in his career and the first this season.
James McCann is catching and Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter.
Gore, the third-overall pick by the Padres in the 2017 draft who was part of the Juan Soto trade on Aug. 2, is 2-0 with 3.00 ERA and 1.467 WHIP in three starts. He’s allowed five runs and 12 hits with 10 walks and 18 strikeouts in 15 innings.
Gore has surrendered only one home run.
This is Gore’s 20th career major league game, his 17th start and his first appearance against the Orioles, who are trying for the sweep of the two-game series.
Left-handed hitters slash .212/.369/.333 against Gore, and right-handers slash .253/.340/.368. He throws his fastball about 61 percent of the time, with almost equal usage of his slider and curveball as secondary pitches. The fastball averages 94.6 mph.
