Bud Norris talks about going on the disabled list

The Orioles today officially placed pitcher Bud Norris on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a right groin strain. Reliever Evan Meek was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. "I tried to throw the bullpen on Wednesday and it definitely didn't feel as good as I wanted it to," Norris said this morning. "Was grimacing a little bit and (pitching coach Dave Wallace) made the decision to shut it down. The MRI wasn't what they wanted to see. norris-with-glove-close-white-sidebar.jpg"From doctor's orders I got yesterday is to take five days off and let it calm down and so forth. Buck (Showalter) called me yesterday and said we are going to make a move and put me on the DL. "It's kind of frustrating because I've been throwing the ball so well and obviously want to keep playing. But I've got to get this thing right. Still have a lot of season left. Let this thing calm down, get back to 100 percent and get back out there." Norris has the best ERA of any O's starter. He is 7-5 with an ERA of 3.62 over 14 starts. In his last three starts, he gave up just two runs over 19 2/3 innings, going 3-0 with an ERA of 0.92. Norris has won his last four starts. "You want to push through it, but you have to look at the big picture and the big picture is the team and 162 and get into postseason," he said. With the retroactive date, Norris could be activated again as soon as July 7. Is that a reasonable date for his return? "Once again, the health timeline is the health timeline," he said. "You can only go off how you feel. Hoping it's 15 (days only), if not, a couple more from there, but I'll do everything I can as far as the training room to take care of it and get back out there." Norris has had groin issues in the past, but none that sent him to the DL. Now he goes to the DL at a time when he's throwing as well as he has all year. "Previous ones were my left (groin) and was actually in a different spot," he said. "This one has kind of moved around a little bit, moved into the quad. It's a different one and your back leg compared to your landing leg. Regardless, you can't do much without your legs. Just treat it and get better. "My numbers are numbers, but the fact we are winning games when we're out there is what is important. We're trying to get into a stretch and run off a lot of wins. That is frustrating but these guys will pick me up. I'll pick them up when I come back."
