Jeremy Guthrie will have to settle for a no-decision.
I thought manager Buck Showalter made the right call bringing back Jeremy Accardo for the eighth inning. Accardo threw seven pitches, all of them for strikes, while cruising through the seventh. No reason to pass the baton.
Well, Showalter has done it a few times in the eighth.
Accardo was done after Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff single and Dustin Pedroia's walk. Clay Rapada replaced him and gave up a run-scoring single to the left-handed hitting Adrian Gonzalez. Koji Uehara replaced Rapada and served up Kevin Youkilis' three-run homer.
Orioles 4, Red Sox 4.
Not exactly the way Showalter drew it up.
Rapada has been charged with four runs in 1 2/3 innings since having his contract purchased.
Update: Vladimir Guerrero's one-out single in the bottom of the eighth scored Derrek Lee and gave the Orioles a 5-4 lead.
Nick Markakis and Lee started the rally with back-to-back singles off reliever Daniel Bard. They moved up on Jason Varitek's passed ball, but Markakis was thrown out at the plate after Guerrero swung through another pitch that eluded Varitek. Bard covered the plate, took Varitek's throw and made the tag.
Guerrero followed with a single up the middle, making him 6-for-19 with eight RBIs with runners in scoring position.
That's an unearned run off Bard.
