Catching up on a crazy game (we're tied, Britton hurt)

Kevin Gausman stepped onto the mound tonight and entered the Bizarro World.

How else to explain back-to-back errors by Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop that gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead in the third inning? They didn't have a miscue through 22 games before tonight.

Or the White Sox's attempt to get a double play changed to a triple play via manager's challenge, and Robin Ventura being ejected when it didn't go his way?

Or White Sox starter Mat Latos allowing four runs, two more than he surrendered in his first four starts over 24 1/3 innings?

Pedro-Alvarez-at-bat-white-sidebar.jpgPedro Alvarez hit his first home run as an Oriole and is a triple shy of the cycle. Hyun Soo Kim needs a triple and home run for the cycle. And the Orioles lead 4-3 as we head to the top of the sixth inning.

Gausman issued a four-pitch walk to leadoff hitter Adam Eaton in the first and got back to the dugout with his count at nine. Tyler Saladino grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, with Machado barehanding the ball in foul territory after bobbling it, and Jose Abreu lined to Chris Davis to end the inning.

Gausman should have gotten through the third unscathed after singles by Jerry Sands and Dioner Navarro and Austin Jackson's strikeout, but Machado field Eaton's grounder and threw past Schoop.

Schoop ran down Saladino's pop up with his back to the infield and dropped the ball, allowing another run to score.

Gausman finally took matters into his own glove, fielding Abreu's comebacker and starting a 1-4-3 double play.

Brett Lawrie homered for the second consecutive night to increase the lead to 3-1 in the fourth, but the Orioles ambushed Latos in the bottom half. Alvarez went to the opposite field for his first homer, giving him six hits in his last nine at-bats. Schoop homered with two outs to tie the game, and Kim followed with his second hit of the night and his eighth in 13 at-bats this season.

Kim didn't have an extra-base hit before tonight. The double came in the third on a shot past Abreu at first base.

Not sure whether the Orioles saved the ball for him.

Machado reached on an infield hit as Kim held at second. Adam Jones followed with a sharp grounder to third baseman Todd Frazier, who stepped on the bag and threw to Lawrie at second.

Double play. Except that Machado reached for Lawrie's ankle and slid to the left of the bag. That's two violations of the new slide rule, right?

Ventura wanted a triple play. The world wondered whether the call could be changed in this situation.

Toronto's Jose Bautista inadvertently ended a game in this manner by reaching for Logan Forsythe's ankle, but it was a double play. The rule doesn't actually cover triple plays, right?

Does that even matter? We don't know.

The delay lasted 3 minutes and 29 seconds. The postgame explanation may exceed it.

Matt Wieters walked with two outs in the fifth and scored on Alvarez's third hit of the night, a double to center field. Alvarez tapped his chest and pointed skyward as he reached second base.

He's on fire. Maybe he was putting out the flames.

That's seven hits for Alvarez in his last 10 at-bats. It was only a matter of time.

Manager Buck Showalter said bench coach John Russell told him that once Alvarez heats up, it's going to be fun to watch. We saw the first sparks at Tropicana Field.

Gausman, meanwhile, has retired seven in a row and has thrown 94 pitches in six innings. Mychal Givens is warming in the bullpen.

Update: Kim singled again in the sixth, making him 9-for-14 this season.

Update II: Kim scored on Jones' double, but the White Sox got the run back against Mychal Givens in the top of the seventh.

Gausman allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits in six innings, with one walk, three strikeouts and a home run. He threw 94 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Update III: Darren O'Day gave up his first runs in 11 appearances, as the White Sox took a 7-5 lead in the eighth inning.

Pinch-hitter Carlos Sanchez doubled and scored Jose Abreu's single. Two batters and the game was tied.

Todd Frazier homered into the Orioles' bullpen. Three batters and the Orioles were behind.

Update IV: We're tied again.

Chris Davis' two-out, two-run double in the eighth off left-hander Zach Duke knotted the score. Both runs were charged to former Oriole Matt Albers, who hadn't been scored upon in his last 30 appearances. They were unearned, however, after Abreu's error.

Update V: Zach Britton struck out the first two batters in the ninth and limped off the field after chasing Adam Eaton's bunt past the mound.

Eaton reached first base and Vance Worley replaced Britton.
