Chris Davis homers twice as Orioles come from down four to beat Nats

What a wild night at Camden Yards. Chris Davis got out-homered three to two by Ryan Zimmerman, but the Orioles stormed back from a four-run deficit to beat the Nationals 9-6 in front of a stirred up crowd of 39,129 at Oriole Park. The Birds went to the last of the seventh down 6-3 but scored six times to get the lead. The inning featured a two-run homer from Steve Pearce and an RBI double by Manny Machado to tie it 6-6. Nick Markakis singled him in for the 7-6 lead and Davis' second homer of the night, a two-run shot, made it 9-6. Davis went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. He is batting .600 at 18-for-30 during during an eight-game hitting streak. He now has 19 homers and 50 RBIs after 53 games. The 19 homers is the most by an Orioles player through the team's first 53 games of a season since Brady Anderson in 1996. Davis has hit six homers over his last eight games, eight in the last 12 and 10 over his last 19. Struggling closer Jim Johnson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out the last two batters to end it. Johnson was 1-3 with four blown saves and a 21.60 ERA over his last six games. His outing capped off a night where the O's bullpen pitched 4 1/3 shutout innings to aid the comeback win. Meanwhile, Zimmerman homered in the first, fourth and fifth frames off Chris Tillman, driving in four runs. Zimmerman had three homers in 137 at-bats this season before tonight. Tillman allowed a season-high six runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings and he gave up a career-high four homers. He had pitched to an ERA of 2.62 over his previous seven starts. The Orioles got to Nats starter Jordan Zimmermann, who came into this outing with an 8-2 record and 1.71 ERA. He had allowed a total of six earned runs over his last six starts covering 46 2/3 innings, but tonight gave up 10 hits and seven runs (all earned) in six-plus frames. The most runs he had allowed in a start this year was three. Markakis added a solo homer for the Orioles as each team hit four in the game tonight. In his return to the team, Ryan Flaherty went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. The Orioles have now hit 22 homers in the last nine games and 33 in the last 16. They are 16-5 when they hit two or more homers. The Orioles have won seven of the last 10 in the series against Washington and take a 25-20 all-time series lead. The Orioles even their home record on the season at 12-12 and improve to 29-24 overall, winning for the sixth time in the last nine games. The Orioles have won two of three from the Nats this week and tomorrow they play the finale of the four-game home-and-home series with Freddy Garcia (1-2, 4.61 ERA) facing Dan Haren (4-5, 5.43 ERA).
