Chris Davis puts his name in the record book as the O's top Toronto

Chris Davis entered tonight with 20 homers, one shy of his career high. He took care of that and more tonight as the Orioles beat Toronto 6-2 in Game 1 of a three-game weekend series. Davis produced the 19th three-homer game in Orioles history and first since Nick Markakis went deep three times against Minnesota on August 22, 2006. Davis had 21 homers for Texas in 2009 and now he has 23 for the Orioles with 37 games remaining. He hit a Eutaw Street homer off Carlos Villanueva in the second inning. He hit a bomb to right-center off Villanueva in the fourth and hit a two-run shot to left off Steve Delabar in the sixth. He came up in the eighth with a chance to become the first Oriole ever with a four-homer game but stuck out swinging against Brad Lincoln. There have been seven three-homer games in O's home games and the last four were at Camden Yards by Roberto Alomar, Albert Belle and Markakis. According to Elias, this is the first time in major league history a club has been involved in back-to-back three-homer games. Adrian Beltre of Texas hit three homers off the Orioles on Wednesday night. Davis' big night overshadowed a second straight strong outing by Zach Britton. He got the win to improve to 3-1, giving up two runs and four hits over 6 2/3. Over his past two starts he has given up just the two runs over 13 2/3 innings. So the Orioles take the series opener and hand Toronto its sixth straight loss, its ninth in 10 games and 20th over the last 25 games as the Jays fall to 56-69. The Orioles, who began the night in a three-way tie for the AL's second wild-card berth, are now 68-57. They have won seven of the last 11, 13 of 19 and are 22-13 over the last 35 games. According to Elias, Davis is third player with 3-HR game and a win as pitcher in a season since 1900. The other two? Babe Ruth (1930) and Jim Tobin (1942).
