Cooling off the Crisp rumor (and update on hires)

Well, that was fun. I've heard from a team source that the Orioles spoke to Coco Crisp's agent a while ago, but nothing significant came from it. Another source shot down any possibility that the Orioles were on the verge of signing Crisp. Meanwhile, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com sent two tweets early this morning that read as follows: While Orioles talked to Crisp's agent, it sounds like its not them (I need a new crystal ball). Not a perfect fit for Baltimore. Orioles are looking for a leadoff hitter. But apparently, they are looking elsewhere now. Sev other teams were in on Crisp. I stayed up past 1:30 a.m. for this? Anyway, it's mildly interesting that the Orioles considered signing Crisp after apparently having their outfield set, which won't quiet rumors that Adam Jones could be headed to the Braves. And yes, the Orioles need a leadoff hitter. Executive vice president Dan Duquette is trying to make changes to the lineup. The focus on a leadoff hitter is another indication that the Orioles are concerned about second baseman Brian Roberts and are proceeding as if he won't be ready in spring training. They'll make the necessary adjustments if they're wrong. Meanwhile, the Orioles are expected to announce the hiring of Rick Peterson as minor league pitching coordinator - or a title close to it - and Chris Correnti as part of their athletic training staff. Peterson, the former major league pitching coach, interviewed twice with the Orioles. He's been the favorite all along - I reported on his first meeting with Duquette at the warehouse back on Dec. 1 - and it was just a matter of time before it became official. Correnti served as an assistant trainer/rehabilitation coordinator/physical therapist with the Red Sox and Mets, working mostly with the pitchers and focusing on their mechanics to prevent injuries. He gained notice as Pedro Martinez's personal trainer. The Sun reported yesterday that the Orioles were on the verge of hiring Correnti.
