Dan Duquette interviewing Friday, waiting on others (updated)

The Orioles have arranged for former Expos and Red Sox executive Dan Duquette to fly into Baltimore and interview tomorrow morning for the position of president of baseball operations. Duquette, who twice traded for pitcher Pedro Martinez, will be the sixth candidate interviewed by the search committee. Duquette, the cousin of former Orioles vice president of baseball operations Jim Duquette, began his baseball career in 1980 as a scouting assistant with the Braves. While he was the Expos' farm director, the club drafted outfielders Marquis Grissom, Cliff Floyd and Rondell White, and signed future Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero. He acquired Martinez from the Dodgers as Montreal's general manager, and from the Expos as the Red Sox's GM. He also traded for catcher Jason Varitex and pitcher Derek Lowe. Duquette served as Boston's GM from 1994 until being fired by new owner John Henry in March 2002. Phillies assistant general manager Scott Proefrock interviewed for the Orioles' GM job earlier today, following Jerry Dipoto, Tony LaCava, De Jon Watson and John Stockstill. The Orioles are still waiting to hear back from Tampa Bay executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and Minnesota Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff. They also have contacted the Yankees regarding executive Damon Oppenheimer and could do the same with Billy Eppler. The Orioles still want to contact the Rangers about Thad Levine and A.J. Preller. They also intend to reach out to former Royals general manager Allard Baird, who currently serves as the Red Sox's vice president, player personnel and professional scouting. According to a source, the Orioles are most interested in meeting with Friedman and Radcliff. However, many people in the industry expect Friedman to remain in Tampa Bay. Update: The Orioles almost certainly will interview Oppenheimer, perhaps this weekend, and Eppler remains a possibility. They haven't crossed him off the list. And they reportedly have contacted the Red Sox about Baird. Also, Watson has removed himself from consideration, according to a source, though it's probably a formality. The Orioles hadn't planned on bringing him back for a second interview, and their pursuit of other candidates was a clear sign that they planned on going in another direction.
