Darren O'Day is about to make his pitch for the USO

Orioles right-hander Darren O'Day and his wife Elizabeth are hosting a barbecue at Camden Yards before Sunday's game and proceeds are going to benefit the USO. Net proceeds raised through this event will go directly to USO programs that support deployed troops, military families, wounded, ill and injured troops, as well as their caregivers and families of the fallen. O'Day provided some background on how he came to be involved with the event. "Last summer, my wife told me about the USO and this charity model where you have a barbeque in your backyard," O'Day said. "You provide the food and everyone you invite brings a donation. We decided to do it on a big scale and have it here at the park. "We'll have a barbeque from noon to 1:30 p.m. before the game Sunday. Unfortunately, ticket sales are closed, but if you go on the O's web page there is a link where you can donate or to buy some of the auction items we are having." Fans can click here to donate and support O'Day and the USO. The event is part of the OriolesREACH program and some of O'Day's teammates are expected to mingle with some of those coming to the event. "The USO does an invaluable service," O'Day said. "These men and women are stationed all over the world, sometimes in inhospitable places. The USO aims to bring a little bit of home to these people all over the world. They do some amazing work." It is clear this cause has meaning for O'Day and it's not just about providing needed funds to a worthy organization. "My grandfather actually fought in World War II and died as a result of it," O'Day said. "You can't let things like that go for naught. If I can do any good by being able to pitch here and provide a little publicity, then I'm glad to do it. It's a really good cause and helps a lot of good people." The runs are coming in droves now: The Orioles scored eight runs on 14 hits with five doubles and two homers last night. They have now scored six runs or more in five straight games. The team record is six or more runs for six games in a row, and has been done twice before. Most recently, that happened from June 20-26, 1993. The middle of the order - Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Nelson Cruz - had a huge night on Friday. That trio went a combined 6-for-10 with three doubles, two homers, seven runs and five RBIs. Over the last five games, the O's team batting average is .328 with 38 runs, 63 hits, 13 doubles and 10 homers.
