NEW YORK - The Orioles have now hit 200 or more homers for five straight seasons. Chris Davis connected on a two-run shot in the third inning today that was No. 31 for him and No. 200 for the 2016 Orioles.
Davis drilled a 2-1 slider from Chad Green to center field to score Mark Trumbo, who walked ahead of him. It was the seventh home run in the last 11 games for Davis. It gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead.
The Orioles hit 214 home runs in 2012, 212 in 2013, 211 in 2014 and 217 last season. The last year they failed to reach the 200 mark was with 191 in 2011.
This was the second-fastest an Orioles team ever got to 200 homers, doing so in Game 129. The 1996 Orioles hit No. 200 in Game 126.
New York took a 1-0 lead in the first against Dylan Bundy. He walked Jacoby Ellsbury and Gary Sanchez with one out and Mark Teixeira's double to right made it a 1-0 edge. But then Bundy fanned two to end that inning at 25 pitches.
The Yankees moved back ahead scoring three runs after two were out and none on in the last of the third. Teixeira singled and then a Didi Gregorius infield single went off Davis' glove wide of first. Starlin Castro's single made it 2-2. With Brian McCann at bat, New York tried a double steal of second and home. Gregorius was called out at home on a 2-6-2 play, but a replay overturned the call and New York had a one-run lead. That lead grew to 4-2 on McCann's double as Bundy struggled to get that third out.
Earlier today, Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters that he sent a text this morning to catcher Caleb Joseph who had a game-winning hit in the 14th inning last night for Triple-A Norfolk as the Tides beat Charlotte 7-6.
"I talked to Caleb," Showalter said. "Said '14 innings, game winner, you're my hero.' "
Joseph and his brother, Corban, both drove in two in the win as Norfolk pulled to within 3 1/2 games of Gwinnett for first place in the International League South Division. The game included two shutout innings of relief from infielder Ozzie MartÃnez in his first professional pitching appearance.
In four games with Norfolk, Caleb Joseph is batting .286 (6-for-21) with two RBIs. He went 2-for-7 last night.
Showalter said he is playing well for Norfolk.
"(He's doing) great. Had two RBIs last night," Showalter said. "If I know Caleb, he probably got the ball. Reading R.J.'s (manager Ron Johnson) narrative raving about him catching. He caught 14 innings and had a big throw-out in the 14th. R.J. said he tried to see if he wanted to come out and he said, 'No.' He'll be back here shortly."
More homers from both sides: Gary Sanchez hit another homer as New York led 5-2 in the fourth. It was his ninth homer in his last 10 games. Sanchez became the fastest player in major league history to 11 homers, doing so in his 23rd game.
The O's closed within 5-4 getting back-to-back homers from Mark Trumbo and Davis in the top of the fifth. It was No. 39 for Trumbo and No. 32 for Davis, who has a two-homer game. This is Davis' second multi-homer game of the season and 17th of his career. The O's went back-to-back for the 16th time.
More bashing of O's pitching: T.J. McFarland replaced Bundy in the last of the fifth and it didn't go well for him. He gave up two-run homers to Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks in 2/3 of an inning before Mychal Givens came in. Bundy went four, allowing seven hits and five runs to tie his career high. New York led 9-4 after five innings.
Through their first 13 innings on offense in this series, New York has scored 23 runs and hit six homers.
They would add to that scoring three more runs off Mychal Givens in the last of the sixth to make it a 12-4 lead. O's pitchers have allowed 12 runs or more four times in the last nine games.
It's a final: Another day and another blowout loss for the Orioles. It was 14-4 last night and 13-5 today. That is a lot of runs to give up in less than 24 hours. The Yankees had 18 hits for the second day in a row.
In this series, New York has scored 27 runs on 36 hits and is 14-for-27 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees improved to 67-61 and have won 11 of their last 16 games.
The Orioles fall to 70-59 and have lost eight of 12 and 12 of their past 19 games. The Orioles are 1-5 this year at Yankee Stadium and 4-13 in this ballpark since Sept. 25, 2014.
