Davis, Jones among AL All-Star voting leaders

Major League Baseball announced today that Chris Davis is leading American League first baseman in All-Star voting, and Adam Jones ranks among the top three outfielders. Today marks the first day that totals have been revealed. Third baseman Manny Machado, shortstop J.J. Hardy and catcher Matt Wieters currently rank second. Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who never has been elected a starter, leads all AL players with 1,500,165 votes. Machado has received 723,943 votes for the 84th Midsummer Classic, to be played July 16th at Citi Field in New York. Davis, who leads the majors with 20 home runs, would become the first Orioles first baseman since Eddie Murray in 1985 to earn a starting spot in the All-Star Game. Jones, a two-time All-Star, has totaled 1,181,875 votes and would join Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, Ken Singleton and Brady Anderson as the only fan-elected Orioles outfielders in All-Star history. Twins catcher Joe Mauer has tallied 863,450 votes and is followed by Matt Wieters with 715,055. Wieters is seeking his third consecutive All-Star appearance. In the tightest race thus far, Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus (727,555) leads (717,103) in an effort to end Derek Jeter's streak of seven consecutive fan-elected starts.
