Davis leaves game injured as Orioles fall at Anaheim

The Orioles lost a game, 4-0, to the Los Angeles Angels and lost their first baseman tonight in Anaheim. They have a chance to get back in the win column tomorrow, but we don't yet know if Chris Davis will be back in the lineup that soon. Davis led off the top of the fifth with a groundout to third base. His right leg appeared to hit the bag awkwardly and he began limping as he returned to the first base dugout. When the Orioles took the field, Ryan Flaherty was in at first base and it was announced that Davis had left the game with a right knee injury. On MASN's "O's Xtra" postgame show, Buck Showalter told Gary Thorne that Davis will have an MRI tomorrow. "I just talked to Chris. He is pretty upbeat about it. We'll see what we've got it. We are hoping for good news and we'll see," Showalter said. Davis was the American League Player of the Month for April and began tonight batting .337 with nine homers and 29 RBIs. He has hit 41 homers in his last 153 games. The Orioles were blanked tonight by Angels lefty Jason Vargas. He held them to three hits - a J.J. Hardy two-out single in the fifth, an Adam Jones leadoff double in the seventh and a Nick Markakis double in the ninth. Vargas needed 107 pitches to record his fourth career shutout and ninth career complete game. Vargas entered this outing with an 0-3 record and 4.85 ERA along with a batting average against of .325. But he had allowed just five runs over 15 innings in his previous two starts. Mark Trumbo led off the last of the second with a booming homer to center off Miguel Gonzalez to give the Angels a 1-0 lead on his seventh homer of the season. In the fifth, after a one-out single, Mike Trout hit a two-out, two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. It was his fourth homer. Gonzalez left the game after throwing just 80 pitches over six innings due to a right thumb blister. He gave up six hits and three runs with no walks and five strikeouts. Gonzalez is now 2-2 with an ERA of 4.58. Showalter wondered after the game if Gonzalez could make his next start saying it was a pretty deep blister. With the loss, the Orioles fall to 5-4 on this road trip, 10-8 on the road this year and 17-13 with four losses over the last six games.
