Davis' season ends with injury in fourth inning (we're tied, attendance note)

Chris Davis received at least three standing ovations today. The first one came while receiving his award as Most Valuable Oriole. The second came as he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. The last one came as he walked off the field in the fourth with head athletic trainer Richie Bancells. It wasn't supposed to be this way. Davis appeared to injure his left wrist as a throw from catcher Steve Clevenger and Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury arrived at his mitt at the exact same time. The wrist bent back as Ellsbury made contact, and Davis was in obvious pain as Bancells ran onto the field. A run scored on Clevenger's error, giving the Red Sox a 5-0 lead. Ellsbury sent a tapper up the third base line near home plate. Clevenger spun and made a strong throw, but the ball veered toward Ellsbury as Davis reached for it. Davis took a couple of throws to test the wrist before leaving the game. Davis ends his season batting .286 with 42 doubles, 53 homers, 138 RBIs, 96 extra-base hits and 199 strikeouts in 160 games. He's the only player in major league history to finish with exactly 53 homers. We're waiting for an update on Davis, who will be given strong consideration for Most Valuable Player in the American League. Update: Davis sprained his left wrist. I guess he's day-to-day, though I'm not sure whether the phrase applies in the final game. It's definitely a season-ending injury. Also, Clevenger broke up the combined no-hitter with a leadoff single in the fifth. The Orioles have 54 errors in 162 games. The record is 65 by the 2003 Mariners. The Orioles didn't get a hit off Boston starter Allen Webster in three innings, walking three times in the first without scoring. Felix Doubront replaced Webster in the fourth and walked Steve Pearce with one out. Still no runs or hits through the fourth. Update II: The Orioles sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 5-5. J.J. Hardy's ground-rule double with the bases loaded and one out reduced the Red Sox's lead to 5-2, and Ryan Flaherty followed with an RBI bloop single into left field. Flaherty had replaced Davis at first base. The Orioles loaded the bases again and two more runs scored on Nate McLouth's double. Today's attendance: 44,230, the seventh sellout this season. The season total is 2,357,101, the highest since 2005. T.J. McFarland has replaced Chris Tillman, who allowed five runs (four earned) and eight hits in five innings, with one walk, five strikeouts, two home runs and a wild pitch. He threw 88 pitches, 52 for strikes.
