Davis with homer hat trick (Orioles make history, win 6-4)

Chris Davis has homered onto Eutaw St. tonight. He's homered into the back row of seats in right field. He's homered to left field. He's on a home run rampage. Davis became the first Oriole to hit three home runs in the same game since Nick Markakis kept harassing the Twins' Carlos Silva on Aug. 22, 2006. Tonight marks the 19th time that an Orioles player has achieved a homer hat trick. Davis' first two homers came off Blue Jays starter Carlos Villanueva. Steve Delabar entered in relief after Matt Wieters' sacrifice fly scored Nate McLouth in the sixth, and Davis greeted him with a two-run shot that increased the Orioles' lead to 5-1. Davis is the fourth Oriole to hit three homers in the same game at Camden Yards, joining Roberto Alomar, Albert Belle and Nick Markakis. So, when's the last time that the Orioles were involved in back-to-back games with a player hitting three home runs? The Rangers' Adrian Beltre did it on Wednesday. Fans coaxed Davis into a quick curtain call. He moved to the top step and raised his batting helmet before disappearing into dugout. Davis has hit 23 home runs this season, two more than his career high. He's also managed to overshadow left-hander Zach Britton, who held the Blue Jays to one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings before manager Buck Showalter removed him with runners on the corners, two outs and a 1-0 count on Rajai Davis. Darren O'Day will try to strand two inherited runners. In two starts since being recalled, Britton has allowed one run and 10 hits in 13 2/3 innings. Update: O'Day let an inheirted runner score on Davis' double, so Britton is charged with two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings, with two walks, six strikeouts, one wild pitch and one hit batter. He threw 102 pitches, 59 for strikes. He's allowed two runs and 10 hits in 13 2/3 innings in his two starts since rejoining the Orioles. Brian Matusz replaced O'Day, making his major league lefty specialist debut, and struck out Colby Rasmus on three pitches to strand two runners in scoring position. Update II: According to Elias, this is the first time that a team has been involved in back-to-back games with a player hitting three home runs. Beltre had three Wednesday night in Texas. Davis has three tonight. The Orioles lead, 6-2, after Nick Markakis' sacrifice fly in the seventh. Update III: Jeff Mathis hit a two-run homer off Matt Lindstrom with no outs in the ninth, but Jim Johnson picked up his 39th save in the Orioles' 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays. The Orioles are 53-0 when leading after the seventh inning. They're 60-31 when they hit a home run. And they're 1-0 when Davis hits three of them in the same game. According to Elias, Davis is third player since 1900 with a three-homer game and a win as a pitcher in the same season. The other two are Babe Ruth (1930) and Jim Tobin (1942).
