Davis set to leave team on Sunday

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is expected to miss Sunday's game at Camden Yards and Monday afternoon's game in Milwaukee for the birth of his first child. Doctors will induce labor if Davis' wife, Jill, doesn't have the baby by Sunday. The Orioles will place Davis on paternity leave and bring up a player from the minors, with infielders Jemile Weeks and Steve Lombardozzi the prime candidates. Steve Pearce can play first base while Davis is gone. Davis would rejoin the team Monday night and return to the lineup on Tuesday. Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of a baby boy, Colt, who arrived at 12:58 a.m. I mentioned earlier that Johan Santana threw 56 pitches in four-plus innings today at extended spring training and had his fastball clocked at 86-90 mph. The only run came on a home run. Santana is scheduled to pitch one more game at extended before being assigned to a minor league affiliate. Brad Brach may be available to pitch Friday night after working four innings last night in Pittsburgh. Showalter is impressed with Brach's ability to defend himself against left-handers with his splitter. Preston Guilmet, recalled today after Tommy Hunter went on the disabled list with a strained left groin, could pitch two innings if needed. That qualifies as a long man in the American League. It's conceivable that the Orioles scratch left-hander T.J. McFarland from his start Friday night with Triple-A Norfolk and recall him to back up Bud Norris. The Orioles are hoping that they caught Hunter's injury in time, as they did with Chris Davis' strained oblique. Hunter began the 2011 season on the disabled list with a strained right groin, and the Rangers didn't activate him until July 1. Last night marked the first time that the Orioles scored at least eight runs and lost since May 17, 2013 versus Tampa Bay. The Orioles have recorded 12 hits in each of the last three games. The last time they recorded 12 or more hits in four straight games was April 12-16, 2007.
