Designating someone to handle the DH role

If you're actually concerned that an entire day and night will pass without more baseball awards being distributed, you can stop rocking back and forth and scratching your arms. The Rawlings Platinum Glove Award winners will be unveiled during the Gold Glove Award ceremony at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. This is the third year that Rawlings is handing out platinum winners in each league. Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre won the first two in the American League, and Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina won the first two in the National League. Molina is still eligible, but Beltre is not. Only Gold Glove winners may receive a Platinum Glove, and the Orioles' Manny Machado ousted Beltre last week. Machado also won a Fielding Bible Award and Orioles Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award. I hear he's also up for CMA Entertainer of the Year and Best Supporting Actor, but I need to check my sources. I'm sure he's got so many people to thank. Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia beat out Machado last night for Wilson's Defensive Player of the Year in the American League, but Machado is the favorite to take Best Foreign Film. I've been asked to fill out a ballot for the 2013 Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award. Why I was required to wear a tux, I'll never know. It was an easy choice and an extremely difficult one, since I had to choose David Ortiz. I'd rather open-mouth kiss a rabid squirrel, but he hit .314/.398/.565 with 37 doubles, 28 homers and 98 RBIs in 129 games. He's the obvious pick. I also had to select a runner-up, and I chose the Tigers' Victor Martinez, who batted .306/.358/.435 with 31 doubles, 13 homers and 76 RBIs in 139 games. The Orioles' Danny Valencia appears on the ballot. He hit .301/.336/.573 with 13 doubles, eight homers and 21 RBIs in 42 games. I like Valencia, but I wasn't tempted. Only two Orioles have won the award: Tommy Davis in 1974 and Aubrey Huff in 2008. Huff was the last Oriole to win a Silver Slugger Award until this week, when Chris Davis, Adam Jones and J.J Hardy took home the hardware. Orioles designated hitters ranked ninth this season with a .236 average, eighth with a .708 OPS and 12th with 66 RBIs. The Yankees, by the way, were last with a .184 average and .567 OPS. In 2012, the Orioles were 10th with a .242 average, 10th with a .740 OPS and 10th with 70 RBIs. In 2011, they were fifth with a .283 average, 11th with a .735 OPS and 12th with 70 RBIs. They also were 11th with 16 home runs. They could use more production from that spot in the lineup. #analysis The Orioles don't currently have a player on the roster who projects as an everyday DH. Valencia is a candidate to at least platoon against left-handers. Wilson Betemit is no longer around to compete as the left-handed hitting version. I'll go back to the possibility that the Orioles make a run at switch-hitting Kendrys Morales if he doesn't accept the Mariners' qualifying offer. He'd cost a first-round pick. He'd also improve the Orioles' status among designated hitters.
