Double-A Bowie's Samuel Basallo is named to play in the All-Star Futures Game

Double-A Bowie catcher Samuel Basallo, one of baseball’s top prospects and a shining star of the Orioles international program, was selected today to take part in the All-Star Futures Game on July 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Tex.

Basallo is the only O’s rep in the game set for 4:10 p.m. ET that will be televised live on MLB Network.

Basallo, 19, is ranked as the Orioles’ No. 2 prospect behind Jackson Holliday who played in this game last year. He is rated No. 12 in the top 100 by MLBPipeline.com and No. 18 via Baseball America.

Basallo over 68 games this season for the Baysox, is batting .278/.338/.456/.794 with 13 doubles, 11 homers, 39 runs and 34 RBIs.

He got off to a slow start but produced an OPS of .791 in May and .894 in June.

Over his past 32 games since May 21, he has hit .305/.388/.539/.922 with nine doubles, six homers and 19 RBIs.

Basallo signed with the Orioles as a touted international amateur for $1.3 million on Jan. 15, 2021. Baseball America now grades both his power and his throwing arm as 70 grades. He truly burst on the scene last season. In 114 games between Delmarva (83 games), High-A Aberdeen (27 games) and Double-A Bowie (four games) he hit .313/.402/.551/.953 with 27 doubles, seven triples, 20 homers, 75 runs and 86 RBIs.

He began his first year of full season ball in 2023 ranked as the Orioles’ No. 15 prospect on their team top 30 and now is near the top of the team list and top 25 in many publications until the two noted in this story.

Basallo began this season as a DH-only with the Orioles in big league camp after suffering a stress fracture in his right elbow over the winter. He is fine now and has been catching since early this season. This year he has played in 26 games as a catcher, 19 at first base and 21 as the DH.

Basallo is the 14th member of the Baysox to play in the Futures Game and first since Adley Rutschman in 2021.

Former Texas Rangers are managers for the game with Adrian Beltre for the AL squad and Michael Young for the NL team.
