The Nationals rolled to an impressive offensive display for the second consecutive series with a 25-4 win over the Mets last night at Nationals Park.
Last weekend in Miami, the Nats dropped the Marlins 10-3 and 9-1 to begin their four-game series. But on Saturday and Sunday, the club managed just one run in 19 innings in losing two in a row.
First baseman Ryan Zimmerman smacked a two-run homer and a run-scoring single in the rou last nightt, but fully understands his team must find a way to generate offense every game, and not just one or two times a week.
"Yeah, I mean, obviously (Tuesday night was) an easy game to talk about that," Zimmerman said. "We need to do it consistently. But all of us have really talked about this before. The team at the end of the year that's the healthiest is usually the team that wins. We've obviously been banged up.
"It's not an excuse. It just is what it is. If we're going to get to where we want to be, all of us need to be healthy and all of us need to do what we're supposed to do. If we're not healthy, or even if we are healthy and we don't perform like we should perform, then we're not going to win games. It's pretty simple."
Left-hander Tommy Milone (0-0, 5.40 ERA) faces Mets right-hander Noah Syndergaard (6-1, 2.89 ERA) this afternoon in the finale of this quick two-game series.
This morning, the Nationals selected the contract of right-handed reliever Jimmy Cordero from Triple-A Syracuse. In 38 games for the Chiefs this season, he was 4-1 with a 1.67 ERA and six saves, and has not allowed a run in his last 15 outings covering 16 innings. He was acquired from the Phillies in November 2016 and has never pitched in the major leagues.
Cordero, 26, takes the 25- and 40-man roster spots of right-hander Shawn Kelley, who was designated for assignment. Kelley was 1-0 with a 3.34 ERA in 35 relief outings, but allowed seven home runs in 32 1/3 innings.
