PHILADELPHIA - And we're back for another evening at the ballpark. You know the drill by now. The Nationals, after dropping a series opener, will try to get back on track despite an injury-depleted lineup and a patched-together bullpen. They'll hope their starter gives them a bunch of quality innings, then hope they can cobble the rest together and emerge victorious.
That depleted lineup has been depleted even further. Juan Soto was placed on the 10-day injured list today with back spasms. The young left fielder hadn't been able to play for three days, so the club decided not to wait any longer and backdate the transaction the maximum allowed, meaning he'll be eligible to return May 11. Andrew Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to take his roster spot.
The remaining Nationals lineup will have to try to produce against Jake Arrieta, who makes his first start against Washington this season. The veteran right-hander is off to a solid start to the year, but he was roughed up for five runs in five innings by the Marlins in his last outing.
It's up to Patrick Corbin to provide quality innings and give his team a chance. The lefty was great for four innings Monday night against the Cardinals, then fell apart during a 6-run fifth inning. This is his first start against the Phillies this season.
