It's one thing to tick off the opposing team. It's quite another to rile your own manager.
Matt Garza was upset that Rays manager Joe Maddon removed him from tonight's game with two on and two outs in the sixth. He had just issued his second walk of the inning, losing Corey Patterson on four pitches, but still held a 4-1 lead.
Garza began to walk off the mound before Maddon reached it, showing up his manager in the process. Maddon took the ball from him, turned and shouted something at his starter.
It wasn't, "Good game!"
Garza left the field like his hair was on fire. And Maddon wanted to shove the ball down his throat.
Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk left-hander Troy Patton held Charlotte to one earned run (two total) and five hits over 6 2/3 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.
Single-A Frederick's Billy Rowell and Tyler Townsend are each 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Townsend also has a triple.
