Gausman nearing return to Orioles (with Yankees lineup)

Kevin Gausman will move his injury rehab assignment to Single-A Frederick, where he's scheduled to work two innings on Tuesday.

Gausman allowed four runs - including two homers - last night in 3 1/3 innings at Double-A Bowie. He threw 61 pitches.

This will be Gausman's second start with the Keys on his assignment. He allowed one hit and struck out four batters in three scoreless innings at Wilmington.

The Orioles are shortening Gausman to two innings on Tuesday to keep him available if they choose to activate him from the disabled list. They want to put him in a starting role and could return him to the rotation next weekend in Toronto.

Manager Buck Showalter toyed with reporters, dropping a few subtle hints but failing to share his plans.

"I think that will reveal itself going forward," Showalter said, trying to suppress a grin.

Miguel Gonzalez isn't eligible to come off the disabled list until June 25. Mike Wright is expected to start Sunday if not used out of the bullpen over the next two nights, and Gonzalez's absence could open a spot for Gausman.

Gausman said his right shoulder never has felt stronger.

The Orioles want to make sure Gausman builds up enough innings to break camp next spring as one of the five starters.

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop will fly into Baltimore on Sunday afternoon with vice president of baseball operations Brady Anderson. Schoop will work out with the Orioles Monday through Thursday, including two days in Philadelphia, and report to Bowie.

Schoop could resume his workouts at Prince George's Stadium before starting an injury rehab assignment.

Left-hander Wesley Wright threw one inning today at extended spring training and appears ready to go on a rehab assignment. Wright is on the disabled list with a strained left trapezius muscle.

Batting practice the next few days is optional due to health warnings related to the intense heat.

Asked whether he could envision Matt Wieters playing first base on occasion, Showalter replied, "I can envision anything. You know us. I could envision Steve Pearce playing second base."
