Gausman, Norris and game update (O's lose 9-2)

ORIOLES QUICK WRAP Score: Twins 9, Orioles 2 Recap: Chris Davis broke a 1-1 tie with a long home run in the sixth inning, the ball hitting more than halfway up the video board in center field. Mike Wright gave up the tying run in the eighth and Tim Alderson was charged with five runs in the ninth without retiring a batter. Need to know: Jonathan Schoop homered in both intrasquad games and he came off the bench again today to double and single, making him 4-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs in the Grapefruit League. On deck: Tuesday, at Yankees in Tampa, 7:05 p.m. SARASOTA, Fla. - Kevin Gausman's fastball remains in the 95-96 mph range, the same heat he brought last spring training. So much for easing into the competition. "It always takes me longer to get ready arm-wise," Gausman said. "I started throwing the exact same day (last year). I just tried to make sure I was ready coming into camp. "More than anything right now, It's feeling your body, working your pitches and trying to pound the zone." Gausman retired the first five batters before issuing a walk and allowing back-to-back singles that gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead. Wilkin Ramirez sent a liner up the middle near Gausman's head. How has this year's camp compared to 2013? "Last spring, I tried not to step on anyone's feet or really do anything wrong," he said. "Now I have a relationship with most of the guys on the team. I feel comfortable going to them and asking questions. Last year, I really didn't know what to expect - schedule-wise, what we were wearing. This year, I feel more comfortable." Bud Norris allowed a hit and walked a batter in two scoreless innings. "I felt good," he said. "To get back out there and get some game action was pretty special, and my first game here in Sarasota, which was nice. It felt good to get on the mound and work with (Matt) Wieters, and the guys made some plays behind me. "I mixed everything in. Really just wanted to pound the zone. Threw a lot of fastballs. That's kind of the idea. Control your body and get some pinpoint location. Wieters and I have talked about some things, speeding up tempo and stuff like that. It was good to get a good rhythm and flow and go from there. "It went really well. It's more about getting out there, getting back into competition and just feeling comfortable. I've been through a couple (spring trainings) now, so this is a new one to me here in Sarasota, but just to get out there and play baseball again is what you like to do. "I had good results. I felt really good and that's obviously the goal is to leave here healthy." Jonathan Schoop doubled in his only at-bat today, but the Orioles lost their 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth when Mike Wright surrendered a two-out RBI triple to Danny Santana. We're tied. Tim Alderson was charged with five runs and didn't record an out in the ninth. Nick Additon let an inherited runner score and gave up two runs of his own. Twins 9, Orioles 2.
