Girardi on his exchange with Showalter

Yankees manager Joe Girardi reluctantly offered his side of the story concerning tonight's on-field exchange with Orioles manager Buck Showalter. What led to the dispute with Showalter? "The one thing that I've done, the whole time that I'm here, and everywhere I've been, is I'm going to protect our players at all lengths. That's what I'm going to do, and there was something that I saw and I'm just going to leave it at that." What was Showalter's objection? "I don't know." Did what Girardi saw involve third base coach Bobby Dickerson? "I just said I'm going to leave it at that." Could he hear what Showalter was yelling? "No, I couldn't." Were both pitchers warned? "Yeah, and I just said, 'All right, whatever." Did what he saw cease happening after that? "I just said I'm going to leave it at that." Was he talking to the umpires or Showalter when he came out of the dugout? "No, I was talking to the umpires." What was he talking to them about? "The warning. Guys need to pitch inside. Their guy needs to pitch inside, our guy needs to pitch inside, and I don't want someone to get ejected because they think they hit a guy on purpose, when in this istance I don't think anyone was going to do that." Will he talk to Showalter later? "I said I'll leave it at that."
