Miguel Gonzalez had allowed a home run to the first batter he faced in both home starts this season - Detroit's Austin Jackson and Tampa Bay's Desmond Jennings - which made his battle tonight with Kansas City's Alex Gordon must-see TV.
Gordon struck out. No repeat tonight.
Gonzalez retired the side in order, but catcher Salvador Perez homered with one out in the second inning to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
Gonzalez has allowed 10 homers in seven starts with the Orioles. His only clean outing was his last one, when he shut out the Rays over seven innings at Tropicana Field.
The Orioles quickly gave him a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second on Omar Quintanilla's two-out, two-run shot off right-hander Luke Hochevar. Wilson Betemit led off with a double and trotted home when Quintanilla launched a 93 mph fastball on a 3-1 count.
Betemit came into the game batting .304 from the left side of the plate.
Quintanilla has a career-high three home runs, two coming with the Orioles.
Manny Machado had a chance to produce his first major league RBI with Betemit at third base and one out, but he grounded to short.
Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk left-hander Brian Matusz allowed two runs and three hits in the first inning at Charlotte. He walked one, struck out one and threw 27 pitches.
The August 30 game against White Sox will begin at 12:35 p.m. at Camden Yards. It has been listed as TBA.
Update: Machado hit his first major league home run, a solo shot leading off the bottom of the fifth.
Machado deposited an 83 mph slider into the left field seats with the count full. He lowered his head and ran hard out of the box.
Machado is 3-for-6 with a triple and home run in his first two games.
Update II: Machado is the youngest Oriole to hit a home run since 19-year-old Jim Palmer on May 16, 1965. Machado is the sixth-youngest Oriole ever to hit a home run.
Gonzalez has allowed one run and four hits in six innings, with one walk and five strikeouts. He's thrown 77 pitches, 49 for strikes.
