Hanifee undergoes elbow surgery (updated)

Orioles minor league pitcher Brenan Hanifee, a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft out of Turner-Ashby High School in Virginia, underwent ulnar collateral ligament reconstructive surgery on his right elbow yesterday in Dallas.

The team announced that the procedure was "successful."

Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery. Meister handled the same procedure in October on pitcher Carter Baumler, a fifth-round selection in 2020 out of Dowling Catholic High School in Iowa, and repaired pitcher Josh Rogers' left elbow last summer.

Double-A Bowie placed Hanifee on the seven-day injured list earlier this month. He was listed as their fifth starter prior to the season.

Hanifee, 22, appeared in 24 games with Single-A Frederick in 2019 and registered a 4.60 ERA and 1.419 WHIP in 129 innings. He went 7-3 with a 2.75 ERA and 1.121 WHIP in 12 starts with short-season Single-A Aberdeen in 2017 and 8-6 with a 2.86 ERA and 1.076 WHIP in 23 starts with Single-A Delmarva the following summer.

MLBPipeline.com ranked Hanifee as the No. 18 prospect in the organization in 2019, but he fell out of the top 30.

The Orioles left Hanifee unprotected in the Rule 5 draft rather than placing him on the 40-man roster.

Sceroler threw 43 pitches in 1 2/3 innings and surrendered four runs and two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Catcher Nate Nolan hit a two-run homer.

Alexander Wells followed Sceroler to the mound.

The Orioles placed Sceroler on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder tendinitis. He's appeared in only two games, the last on April 11, and allowed three runs and five hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Sceroler must stay on the active roster for 90 days in order to lose his Rule 5 status.

Tides catcher Austin Wynns hit his third home run of the season today. Shortstop Mason McCoy has a triple and two RBIs. Ryan Ripken has a single and two RBIs.

Ripken started at first base, but moved to right field. Third baseman Rylan Bannon was removed for a pinch-hitter after one at-bat, leading to multiple position changes.

Update: Bannon is being evaluated for an undisclosed injury.

Taylor Davis pinch-hit for Bannon in the third inning. Wynns threw out Brian Goodwin attempting to steal third base in the top half of the inning, with Bannon applying the tag.

Bannon is batting .175 with a .545 OPS.
