Hill making first major league start (Nats lose 15-7)

Right-hander Taylor Hill managed to battle his way out of a tough jam in the first inning of his initial major league start. The Marlins got a walk and two base hits in the first. Casey McGehee's RBI single got the Marlins on the board first, 1-0. Hill then induced a huge 4-6-3 double play from Garrett Jones to derail the rally. Hill's Triple-A Syracuse teammate, outfielder Michael A. Taylor, came up big for his buddy to begin the bottom of the first, slamming a double to deep center. Kevin Frandsen brought him in with a single to center, Taylor raced into a slide at home and the Nationals quickly tied the game at 1-1. Jayson Werth then delivered a thrilling triple to score Frandsen all the way from first and the Nationals had their first lead. Wilson Ramos grounded deep to second base, which allowed Werth to scoot on home and the Nationals increased their early advantage to 3-1. Update: The Marlins got another rally going in the second. Justin Bour, from George Mason University, started it with a single. J.T. Realmuto crushed a double. Then Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI groundout cut the Nationals' lead to 3-2. Again, Hill got the Marlins to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Update II: OK, so umm, Steven Souza Jr. just super-crushed a 3-2 pitch deep into the Red Porch at Nats Park, his first major league homer at home and second of career, to restore the Nationals' lead to 4-2. Wow. Sure glad he chose baseball. Update III: It unraveled for Hill in the fifth with Miami scoring four times. Reed Johnson hit a run-scoring single and Realmuto dropped a three-run triple down the left field line. Suddenly the Marlins led 6-4. Hill was lifted for Ross Detwiler. Hill finished 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs, all earned, and two walks while striking out four. He threw 90 pitches, 55 for strikes. Hechavarria drilled an RBI double that scored Realmuto. The Marlins lead 7-4. Update IV: Werth is now 3-for-3 with a single, a double and a triple. He scored in the bottom of fifth on a Tyler Moore double play grounder, trimming the Marlins' lead to 7-5. Update V: The Nationals scored a run in the sixth on a Frandsen RBI single, cutting the Marlins' lead to 7-6, but Ramos grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Update VI: Xavier Cedeno allowed three hits in the seventh, including a two-run double from Bour and the Marlins lead 9-6. Then another Hechavarria single, plus a throwing error by Aaron Barrett, allowed another run to score. The Marlins lead 10-6. Update VII: Well, the ninth inning was a game-changer. The Marlins plated five runs, all charged to Craig Stammen, on six hits. Stammen retired no batters before leaving, and Ryan Mattheus came in to retire the Marlins in order. The Nats were unable to complete the doubleheader sweep on a very long day of baseball. In the second game alone, 22 runs and 34 hits were recorded. Final score: 15-7, Marlins
