Hunter allows two homers after replacing Arrieta (O's win 8-5)

BOSTON - Orioles starter Jake Arrieta was removed from tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox after a 43-minute rain delay and replaced by Tommy Hunter, who struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth. Then it went bad. Daniel Nava and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back home runs to give Boston a 5-3 lead. Nava lined a 96-mph fastball over the Green Monster. Saltalamacchia crushed a 95-mph fastball. Red Sox 5, Orioles 3. Hunter served up 32 home runs last season. He's given up three this year in 3 2/3 innings. He's responsible for three of the seven allowed by the Orioles this season. Arrieta could have continued without the delay. He threw 69 pitches, 39 for strikes. He was charged with three runs and three hits in five innings, with four walks and two strikeouts. Hunter struck out Mike Napoli and won an 11-pitch battle with Will Middlebrooks by striking him out. His fastball topped out at 98 mph. Former Oriole Koji Uehara replaced Red Sox starter Ryan Dempster and retired the side in order in the top of the sixth. Ryan Flaherty is 0-for-3 with three strikeouts, making him 0-for-17 this season. Update: Troy Patton retired all three batters he faced in the seventh and Darren O'Day retired all three batters he faced in the eighth, striking out two batters. Nolan Reimold struck out to end the seventh inning, making Orioles designated hitters 1-for-26. The Orioles are 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position tonight and have struck out 12 times. In addition to being 0-for-17 this season, Flaherty has struck out nine times. Update II: Chris Davis started the top of the ninth with a home run off Red Sox closer Joel Hanrahan. Manny Machado ended Hanrahan's night with a three-run shot that broke a 5-5 tie. Nice comeback. The Orioles had loaded the bases with two outs on a single by Ryan Flaherty - making him 1-for-18 and greatly relieved - and walks to Reimold and Nate McLouth. Pinch-runner Alexi Casilla scored the tying run on a wild pitch, and Machado unloaded on a 95 mph fastball for his first home run. Machado was in a 1-for-18 slump. Here comes Jim Johnson. Update III: Johnson retired the Red Sox in order, and the Orioles ended their three-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory. The bullpen retired the last 10 batters. Hunter got the final out in the sixth, and Patton, O'Day and Johnson were perfect. O'Day gets the win.
