Kelly Johnson hits first home run as Oriole (Markakis homers)

NEW YORK - To find Kelly Johnson's last home run before tonight, you've got to flip the calendar back to July 11. Back to Camden Yards with Miguel Gonzalez on the mound for the Orioles. It's a small baseball world, my friends. Try not to flip over it. Johnson was playing for the Yankees, the first of his three teams this season. He's hit seven home runs, three against the Orioles. Johnson hit his first as an Oriole tonight leading off the top of the second inning. He's starting in the fifth slot in the lineup for the seventh time this season and the 48th in his career. Manager Buck Showalter wants to take a longer look at Johnson and Jimmy Paredes while determining the composition of his Division Series roster. Johnson was 4-for-23 with the Orioles before driving a 91 mph cutter from Brandon McCarthy into the right field seats at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles added another run in the second on singles by Paredes, Nick Hundley and Nick Markakis. Markakis has two hits tonight in two innings, leaving him 33 behind Boog Powell for fifth place on the club's all-time list. I'm still counting. The Orioles were one-hit last night. They've already got five tonight heading to the top of the third. McCarthy is unbeaten in his last six starts against the Orioles. Ubaldo Jimenez walked a batter and hit one in the bottom of the first, but the Yankees didn't score. He threw 22 pitches in the inning, but only 12 in the second while retiring the side in order. Update: Markakis is 3-for-3 tonight, including a two-run homer in the fourth that gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead. Markakis' last three-hit game was Aug. 31. Markakis was 3-for-16 vs. McCarthy before tonight. Alejandro De Aza was 5-for-9, and he's struck out three times. We've entered the bizarro world.
