Machado and Castillo homer in intrasquad game

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles decided to do some scoring in their second intrasquad game.

Manny Machado hit a two-run homer off Vidal Nuño in the bottom of the third inning and Welington Castillo followed with a solo shot to lead the Orange Team to a 3-1 victory over the Black Team at Ed Smith Stadium.

Nuño threw 15 of his 19 pitches for strikes, so at least he was in the zone.

Adam Jones singled with one out for his second hit of the day, lining the eighth pitch of the at-bat into left field. Machado cleared the left field fence and Castillo went to left-center. Both homers were legit.

The Orioles acquired Nuño from the Dodgers on Sunday for minor league pitcher Ryan Moseley.

Manager Buck Showalter halted the inning with two outs due to Nuño's pitch count. Jonathan Schoop popped up and Chris Davis struck out.

Darren O'Day allowed singles by Trey Mancini and Dariel Álvarez in the top of the second inning, but the Black Team didn't score. Chance Sisco struck out, Anthony Santander popped up and Robert Andino grounded into a force.

Orange Team starter Ubaldo Jiménez threw 11 of his 17 pitches for strikes. He faced a fourth batter to raise his count and got a called third strike on Chris Johnson after retiring Aneury Tavárez on a grounder, Johnny Giavotella on a fly ball and Logan Schafer on a grounder.

Jiménez's first pitch since the Edwin Encarnacion walk-off in the wild card game was a ball. The second pitch caused Tavárez's bat to spiral over the dugout and the entire lower section of seats.

Tavárez lost his grip on the bat again leading off the third inning before grounding out against Brad Brach. Giavotella struck out looking and Schafer struck out swinging at a pitch in the dirt.

Jones bounced a single into center field off Black Team starter Kevin Gausman. Machado grounded into a force, but Giavotella's relay sailed over first baseman Mancini's head. Gausman threw 13 pitches, 10 for strikes.

Mancini and Álvarez singled off O'Day in the second inning, but Sisco struck out, Santander popped up and Andino grounded into a force. O'Day threw 17 pitches, 12 for strikes.

Hyun Soo Kim doubled to right field off Dylan Bundy with two outs in the second inning, giving him two hits in two intrasquad games. Seth Smith walked, but Ryan Flaherty flied to deep center field. Bundy, who struck out Davis to start the inning, threw 10 of his 16 pitches for strikes.

Jesús Liranzo tossed a scoreless fourth inning for the Orange Team, though he issued a four-pitch walk to Sisco. Seven of his 13 pitches were strikes.

Left-hander Chris Lee handled the bottom of the fourth. He struck out Mark Trumbo, retired Kim on a grounder to first, walked Smith and struck out Flaherty. Lee threw 19 pitches, but only eight for strikes.

Smith walked twice today. He's an on-base machine.

Left-hander Jed Bradley opened the top of the fifth by walking Santander on four pitches and hitting Andino on an 0-2 count. He walked Tavárez to load the bases with no outs, Giavotella delivered an RBI on a grounder to short and Showalter called the players off the field with Bradley's pitch count at 15.

A light rain began to fall after the bottom of the third inning, but the game wasn't interrupted.

The real fake games begin on Friday with the Orioles traveling to Lakeland to play the Tigers.
