Machado continues monster season (O's lose 5-4)

It's been quite a day for Manny Machado, and it's only the fourth inning. Machado is 2-for-2. He doubled in the first inning, giving him 31 this season. He singled in the third, giving him 28 mult-hit games, which also leads the majors. The 97 hits? Yeah, that also leads the majors. Machado has four straight multi-hit games, going 9-for-18 with four doubles. His average is up to .327. Imagine how good he could become once he turns 21 next month? The Red Sox hadn't scored in 18 innings until tallying three runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Mike Carp hit his eighth home run, a two-run shot off Orioles starter Freddy Garcia that came with a little controversy. Dustin Pedroia appeared to strike out, the ball bouncing in the dirt and backup catcher Taylor Teagarden applying the tag, but plate umpire Jeff Nelson ruled a foul tip. MASN replays showed that Nelson was wrong, and manager Buck Showalter put up a brief argument. Carp, who jumped on an 82 mph changeup, is now 4-for-10 lifetime against Garcia. He walked in the second. Stephen Drew doubled with two outs to score Jonny Gomes, who had singled, and give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead. Garcia has thrown 67 pitches in four innings, 45 for strikes. He's allowed three runs and six hits, with one walk and three strikeouts. Update: The Red Sox took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth on Jacoby Ellsbury's leadoff single and stolen base and a one-out single by Dustin Pedroia. The Orioles wasted a prime opportunity in the bottom half after Teagarden reached on an infield hit, making him 1-for-22 this season. The play easily could have been scored an error on third baseman Jose Iglesias. Pedroia let Nate McLouth's ground ball go through his legs for his first error, putting runners on the corners with no outs and Machado at the plate. McLouth was thrown out trying to steal, making him 23-for-26. Machado bounced to the mound and Nick Markakis flied to left. End of rally. Should McLouth have been running in that situation? Garcia is done after 5 1/3 innings. He served up a home run to Jonny Gomes with one out in the sixth that ended his day. T.J. McFarland replaced him. Garcia is charged with five runs and eight hits, with one walk, three strikeouts and two home runs. He threw 83 pitches, 56 for strikes. Update II: McFarland struck out the first three batters he faced on nine pitches. According to Elias, the last Oriole to strike out three in a row on 9 pitches was Alberto Castillo on Sept. 23, 2008 vs. Tampa Bay. Teagarden has allowed one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. The Orioles still trail 5-2, and Koji Uehara replaced John Lackey in the eighth. The Red Sox are the first team to steal three bases on the Orioles this season. Today's attendance: 42,422 Update III: The Orioles made it very interesting in the bottom of the ninth, getting a two-run homer from Matt Wieters off Boston closer Andrew Bailey and a single by J.J. Hardy that put the tying run on base with one out. Then it got really, really weird. Alexi Casilla pinch-ran for Hardy. Ryan Flaherty lined to right field for the second out and Casilla kept running, getting all the way to third base as the Red Sox completed the game-ending double play. Apparently, Casilla lost track of the outs. The Orioles lost the game 5-4. Yeah, that just happened. MASN's camera showed Casilla saying, "What happened?" Third base coach Bobby Dickerson broke the news to him. McFarland allowed no runs and one hit in a career-high 3 2/3 innings, with one walk and five strikeouts.
