Machado honored with defensive award (updated)

Another day brings another awards show on MLB Network, and more recognition for Manny Machado's defensive excellence at third base. Machado was just named the Orioles' 2013 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year. Every team has one recipient. Last week, Machado became the first Orioles third baseman since Brooks Robinson in 1975 to win a Rawlings Gold Glove Award. He also was the only Oriole to win a Fielding Bible Award. Machado committed 13 errors in 484 chances this season. He registered an ultimate zone rating (UZR) of 31.2 and had 35 defensive runs saved (DRS). He also led all American League third basemen in fielding percentage (.973), assists (355 - most among AL third basemen since Brandon Inge's 398 in 2006 - double plays turned (42) and range factor per game (3.02), and finished second in putouts (116). Machado's 32 Total Zone Runs (the number of runs above or below average the player was worth based on the number of plays made) was the highest total for any defender in the majors in 2013 and tied for the 12th-best season of all-time. It was also the best defensive season by an American League infielder since Mark Belanger's 35 in 1975. Machado posted 4.4 Defensive Wins Above Replacement, pacing all American League defenders (third-highest total in the majors). His 4.4 DWAR is tied for the eighth-highest single-season total of all-time for any position and tied for third in club history. Yeah, he flashed some serious leather. The Wilson award is two years old and is determined by utilizing a formula constructed to balance scouting information, sabermeterics and the standard fielding statistics. Machado has a legitimate chance to be named Wilson's Defensive Player of the Year in the American League. Stay tuned. Update: Machado lost out to Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia as Wilson's American League Defensive Player of the Year. The Orioles and Royals tied for Wilson's Defensive Team of the Year in the AL. Meanwhile, infielder Jonathan Schoop, playing in his first Arizona Fall League game since Oct. 30, homered as part of a 3-for-3 day with the Surprise Saguaros. Schoop hit his third home run and raised his RBI total to six. He also walked twice and scored two runs in a 14-5 win over Peoria. Schoop left the team and returned to Curacao due to a death in his family. He's 10-for-50 with the Saguaros. Henry Urrutia went 2-for-4 with his 10th RBI, a walk and two runs scored, leaving his average at .386.
