Machado places fourth in Comeback Player of the Year voting

Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, who returned from another knee surgery to play in all 162 games this season, finished fourth in voting for the Sporting News' American League Comeback Player of the Year award.

The Rangers' Prince Fielder was first with 112 votes, followed by the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez with 14 and the Indians' Jason Kipnis with 12. Machado received six votes.

The Royals' Kendrys Morales and Ryan Madson, and the Twins' Mike Pelfrey tied for fifth with two votes.

Players submitted their ballots for the award.

Machado became the seventh Oriole with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season. He joined Brady Anderson as the only Orioles with a 30/20 season.

Machado is the ninth Oriole to play in at least 162 games in a season, joining Adam Jones, B.J. Surhoff, Bobby Grich, Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr., Eddie Murray, Miguel Tejada and Rafael Palmeiro. It's happened 25 times in franchise history.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Machado was the only Oriole to hit multiple home runs and steal multiple bases in the same game. He accomplished the feat on Oct. 1 against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.

In 2014, Machado was limited to 82 games and underwent surgery in August to repair a partial tear of the medial patellar femoral ligament in his right knee. He had a similar surgery on his left knee that cost him the first month of the season.

The Sporting News also announced that the Mets' Matt Harvey was chosen as National League Comeback Player of the Year, the Astros' Carlos Correa was selected as AL Rookie of the Year and the Cubs' Kris Bryant was chosen as NL Rookie of the Year.

The AL and NL Managers of the Year will be announced on Tuesday.
