Mancini hit by pitch, leaves game in first (updated)

OAKLAND - If you were wondering what else could go wrong for the Orioles, we found out in the top of the first inning today at Oakland. Potential All-Star Trey Mancini was hit by a pitch and left the game as Chris Davis pinch-ran for him and took over at first base.

A's right-hander Chris Bassitt threw a 3-1 sinker that didn't sink. It came up and in on Mancini at 92 mph. He tried to get his arm up while attempting to avoid the pitch, but it plunked him. An O's trainer came out to look at Mancini and was looking at his left elbow area. After a few moments he walked off with Mancini and Davis went to first base to run.

Mancini went 0-for-4 last night to snap a seven-game hitting streak. But he's been the team's best player in 2019 and one they are pushing hard to get voted into the All-Star game.

In 70 games, Mancini is batting .304/.359/.558 with 18 doubles, two triples, 16 homers and 35 RBIs. He hit .393 during that seven-game hitting streak.

Among the American League leaders, Mancini ranks second in total bases, fourth in slugging, sixth in hits, tied for seventh in batting average and ninth in OPS.

In the AL leaders among outfielders only, Mancini ranks first in total bases, second in hits, third in batting average, tied for third in doubles, fourth in slugging and OPS and tied for seventh in home runs.

Updated: The Orioles announced that Mancini left the game with a left elbow contusion.

No hits through five: The Orioles, after being held to four runs and seven hits in the first two games of this series, did not have a hit through five innings today against A's righty Chris Bassitt. Opener Jimmy Yacabonis went two innings for the Orioles, and Josh Rogers has been on since in a 0-0 game in the series finale.

A's get the lead: No. 9 hitter Josh Phegley hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Oakland leads 3-0.

They get closer: The O's scored two in the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but they left the bases loades. Renato Núñez had an RBI infield single and Rio Ruiz drew a bases-loaded walk.

A's get one back: Stephen Piscotty's RBI double made it 4-2 after six innings.

O's cut lead again: Stevie Wilkerson scored on Anthony Santander's sacrifice fly, and the O's now trail 4-3.

A's get breathing room: Phegley came home on a fielder's choice, and that started the scoring for the A's in the seventh. Shawn Armstrong departed the mound with two runners on base. Khris Davis had an RBI single and Ramón Laureano an RBI double off Richard Bleier. Miguel Castro relieved Bleier and threw a wild pitch that allowed Davis to score. A's lead it 8-3.
