Mark Trumbo homers twice as O's beat Yankees in series opener

Orioles right fielder Mark Trumbo had hit just one homer this year at Camden Yards. He doubled that total tonight as Trumbo's two-homer game led the Orioles past the Yankees 4-1 in the opener of a three-game series.

With the victory, the Orioles have won six in a row against the Yankees for the first time since an eight-game win streak from Sept. 19, 1996 to Sept. 6, 1997.

The Orioles improved to 15-10 on the season, 10-3 at home and 8-4 in games against the American League East. They are 15-4 at home against New York since the start of the 2014 season and are 22-13 versus the Yankees since June 21, 2014.

This was Trumbo's ninth career multi-homer game and second this season. He homered twice in the same inning April 15 at Texas. Trumbo had one homer and two RBIs in 12 home games coming into this series. He also had hit just one homer his past 14 games.

But he unloaded a long solo homer off Yankee right-hander Luis Severino in the second to tie this game 1-1. He hit No. 7 on a 2-2 pitch, a 95 mph fastball, to snap a 3-for-19 run. According to Statcast, at 112.9 mph, that homer was his hardest hit this year and the fourth-hardest of the past two years. It was projected to have gone 428 feet.

Trumbo's two-run shot off a Severino changeup in the fifth was No. 8 on the year to take the team lead. It also made it 4-1 Orioles. The O's had gone up 2-1 in the fourth. Jonathan Schoop doubled to right with two outs and scored on Severino's error. He dropped a throw while running to cover the bag on first against Ryan Flaherty.

Chris Tillman got the win, becoming the second Oriole go seven innings this year. He allowed five hits and the one run. He walked a season-high four, but tied his career high with nine strikeouts and threw 110 pitches.

Tillman improves to 3-1 with an ERA of 2.81 in six starts. Over his past three starts, he is 2-0 with an ERA of 1.37, allowing three runs in 19 2/3 innings with 22 strikeouts. He has allowed two runs or less in five of his six 2016 starts. Darren O'Day got the last three outs to record his second save of the year.

New York has lost six in a row and is 3-7 versus the AL East and 8-16 for the season.

In the second game of this series on Wednesday night, right-hander Tyler Wilson (1-0, 3.06 ERA) faces CC Sabathia (1-2, 5.06 ERA).
