The Nationals have named first baseman Jose Marmolejos-Diaz their organization player of the year, right-hander Austin Voth pitcher of the year and right-hander Austen Williams received the Bob Boone Award, MASNsports.com has learned.
Low Single-A Hagerstown lefty-hitting first baseman Marmolejos-Diaz had a breakout season for the Suns. The 22-year-old Dominican Marmolejos-Diaz hit .310 in 124 games with 39 doubles, five triples, 11 homers and 87 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .363 and his slugging percentage was .485.
Voth was outstanding with Double-A Harrisburg, compiling a 6-7 record with a 2.92 ERA in 27 starts (28 games). The 23-year-old fifth rounder in 2013 out of the University of Washington struck out 148 batters over 157 1/3 innings, allowing only 51 earned runs.
Williams was selected for the Bob Boone Award, which exemplifies "a player that has demonstrated professionalism, leadership, loyalty, passion, selflessness, durability, makeup, intangibles and a tremendous work ethic." The award is in honor of Bob Boone, the current Nationals vice president of player personnel, who displayed all of those qualities in his 20-plus years as a major league player and coach.
Williams split his season between Hagerstown and high Single-A Potomac, plus one spot start for Triple-A Syracuse. Williams worked to improve the manipulation of his pitches so that the hitter could not decipher which pitch he was throwing by the way the ball came out of his hands.
The 22-year-old Williams went 12-8 with a 2.58 ERA. The sixth-rounder in 2014 pitched 139 2/3 innings, striking out 106 and allowing 40 earned runs over 25 starts.
