Matt Harvey throws well as O's rally to win

For a pitcher with a record of 0-7 and ERA of 13.17 over his last eight starts, right-hander Matt Harvey threw quite well tonight. For an offense that had not scored in 24 straight innings, the Orioles no longer have to worry about that streak.

And thanks to a late four-run rally and a bases-loaded walk issued by the Blue Jays in the top of the 10th, the Orioles beat Toronto 6-5 tonight.

The O's ended a six-game losing streak and a 20-game road losing streak, improving to 24-52.

In a 5-5 game in the 10th, Trey Mancini was placed at second base. Lefty Trent Thornton issued two walks to load the bases and Pat Valaika drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch to force in the go-ahead run. It was the eighth pitch of Valaika's at-bat as the O's led 6-5.

The Birds ended Toronto's five-game winning streak and won their first road game since John Means' no-hitter at Seattle on May 5.

Harvey allowed six hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings on 92 pitches, 60 for strikes. He walked one, fanned two and allowed a pair of solo homers.

The Orioles are 6-10 in Harvey's starts this year and had been 1-8 in the last nine.

This was an encouraging start for Harvey, as he had his longest outing since he went 5 2/3 innings against Oakland on May 1.

Harvey gave up a solo homer to George Springer in the second, his third coming on a 3-2 slider. And he gave up a solo shot to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. an inning later. He hit No. 25 a distance of 406 feet to center to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead. An inning later, Randal Grichuk tripled and scored on a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. infield single to third.

Harvey came up an out short from recording his second quality start of the year and the Orioles' 17th game this season where a starter went six innings or more. Harvey had gone nine straight games throwing no more than 4 2/3 innings. Baltimore starters had recorded just two outings of six innings or more in the last 21 games.

Harvey's only previous quality start this season was versus the Yankees on April 26. He gave up one run and three hits over six innings.

Coming into this game, the Orioles had been shut out in back-to-back games and had gone 24 straight scoreless innings.

That ended on a double play grounder in the top of the third. Batting ninth, Pedro Severino reached second on an error by shortstop Bo Bichette. When Cedric Mullins singled to center, the Birds had runners on the corners with none out. But a promising rally got slowed when Freddy Galvis bounced into a 6-3 double play. Severino scored and the Orioles had tied it at 1-1, but they scored no further in that inning.

Toronto extended a two-run lead to 5-1 in the last of the seventh when Marcus Semien drilled a two-run double down the left-field line against right-hander Dillon Tate.

Just when it looked like the O's offense might just run continue through the game with not much going on, they rose up for four in the eighth to tie the game. The rally featured an RBI single by Ryan Mountcastle, a pinch-hit RBI single by Anthony Santander and a game-tying two-run double by Austin Hays.

The Orioles improved to 12-26 on the road and to 10-21 versus the American League East.

Toronto falls to 38-36 for the season, 14-17 at home and 11-11 in June.
