Matt Wieters with a three-run homer to back Wei-Yin Chen as O's top Philadelphia

When Adam Jones hustled up the first-base line tonight, beating out what could have been an inning-ending double play grounder, it led to three big runs for the Orioles.

Jones' hustle kept the sixth inning going for the Orioles. A two-out walk to Chris Davis followed and then Matt Wieters launched a three-run homer to right to turn a 1-0 game into a 4-0 lead.

wieters-finished-swing-white-sidebar.jpgThe hustle, the homer and Wei-Yin Chen's strong pitching propelled the O's to a 4-0 win over the Phillies at Camden Yards. The teams will meet the next three nights playing one more here and then two in Philadelphia.

Chen pitched eight scoreless innings allowing just four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. He improves to 3-4 with an ERA of 2.89 and threw 106 pitches. The eight innings matches his season and career high. He rolled through the first six innings on just 67 pitches. Zach Britton pitched the ninth to complete the Orioles fourth shutout.

Chen allowed two earned runs or less for the ninth time and recorded his team leading eighth quality start. The O's are 8-5 when he takes the mound this year.

Until Chen's outing tonight, O's starters had gone eight consecutive games without pitching six innings or more and 14 straight without going seven innings or more. Chen also ended a run of eight straight games without a quality start.

It was Wieters' second homer in eight games since coming off the DL and his first at Camden Yards since May 1, 2014. Wieters hit a 2-1 slider from losing pitcher Aaron Harang that found too much of the plate.

The Orioles improved to 32-31 and won for the seventh time in eight games and for the ninth time in the last 11. They are now 2-4 in interleague games.

The Phillies have the worst record in the majors at 22-43. They've lost seven in a row and 10 of 11. They've lost 11 in a row on the road and have baseball's worst road mark at 7-27.

After they were retired on just one hit and 44 pitches by Harang through four innings, the Orioles took the 1-0 lead in the fifth. With two outs, Travis Snider doubled to deep left with the ball deflecting off the glove of left fielder Cody Asche. J.J. Hardy followed with a single to center to drive in his 11th run and extend his hitting streak to eight games.

In the second game of this series on Tuesday night, Chris Tillman (4-7, 5.68 ERA) faces right-hander Jerome Williams (3-6, 5.71).
