Matt Wieters with some impressive homer stats

Here are some impressive home run stats for Orioles catcher Matt Wieters. He started hitting more homers late last year as you may recall and, in fact, he had 12 of his 22 homers in 2011 in the season's final two months. If you combined that with his fast start this year - he has four homers already - Wieters has now hit 16 home runs over his last 45 games. That is a 57-homer pace over 162 games. He hit 12 in his last 36 games last year and has four in the first nine games this season. He sat out one game. Wieters began today tied for the American League homer lead with four with teammate Adam Jones along with Josh Hamilton, Josh Willingham and Ian Kinsler. His OPS of 1.212 ranks third right now in the AL. If you go back over those last 45 games, Wieters has hit those 16 homers in 161 at-bats for an average of one homer every 10 at-bats. Jose Bautista led the AL last year, averaging one homer every 11.9 at-bats. Any way you slice it, Wieters is now hammering homers at a torrid pace. Also last year, Wieters hit just .237 against right-handed pitching with 11 homers over 379 at-bats. So far this year, he has four homers in 26 at-bats and an average of .346 against right-handed pitching. By the way, Wieters homered twice in the game in the eighth or later and according to Elias, the last Oriole to homer twice in a game in the eighth inning or later was Miguel Tejada back on August 23, 2005 against the Angels and the last major leaguer to do it was Evan Longoria on September 28, 2011 against the Yankees. It was Wieters' second career two-homer game as he went deep twice July 26, 2010 at Toronto and the five RBI tied his career high (September 15, 2009 against Tampa Bay).
