Matt Harvey placed on 10-day injured list

The Orioles found their infield coverage this afternoon while creating room in their rotation.

Veteran starter Matt Harvey is on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation, the move coming after he made his 28th start last night. Infielder Richie Martin has been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk and gives the Orioles five players on their bench.

Harvey is 6-14 with a 6.27 ERA and 1.543 WHIP in 127 2/3 innings. His 28 starts rank first on the club, three ahead of Jorge López, who was moved to the bullpen before spraining his right ankle and likely staying on the IL for the remainder of the season.

The 10-day period allows Harvey to return later this month, depending on the severity of his injury. He hasn't completed the fifth inning in his two starts in September, going 4 1/3 last night and charged with three earned runs and four total with nine hits.

Manager Brandon Hyde had six starters with Harvey joined by John Means and rookies Chris Ellis, Keegan Akin, Zac Lowther and Alexander Wells. Mike Baumann made his major league debut out of the bullpen Tuesday night, earning the win after allowing an unearned run in 3 2/3 innings, and Hyde said the right-hander would work again in relief in the next few days.

Ellis is starting Friday night's series opener against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards and Akin is pitching in one of the games in Saturday's doubleheader.

Harvey, meanwhile, is trying to tie his career high of 29 starts in 2015 with the Mets, but the Orioles also are in an evaluation period with their younger players.

The Orioles signed Harvey to a minor league deal on Feb. 17 that guaranteed $1 million if he made the club. He registered a 7.70 ERA and 1.763 WHIP in 18 starts in the first half, but was 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 0.955 WHIP in four starts in July, covering 22 innings.

Harvey crafted a scoreless streak of 21 2/3 innings before leaving his Aug. 4 start at Yankee Stadium with soreness in his right knee.

Martin fits on an expanded roster with infielder Ramón Urías dealing with soreness in his upper right leg. Urías came off the bench last night and delivered a big run-scoring single in the eighth inning, but he tried to run earlier today and still isn't ready to return to the lineup.

The Orioles optioned Martin on Aug. 23, the same day that they designated third baseman Maikel Franco for assignment and recalled infielders Jahmai Jones and Kelvin Gutiérrez.

Martin recovered from a fractured left wrist sustained with Triple-A Norfolk after running into the center field fence, joined the Orioles on Aug. 2 and went 10-for-44 with a double and a home run in 15 games. He also committed three errors.

The former Rule 5 pick was batting .208/.321/.323 in 27 games with Norfolk, with four doubles, two triples, a home run and five RBIs.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball and its official scorers have overturned two calls impacting the Orioles during their weekend series in the Bronx.

Urías was charged with an error Friday night in the sixth inning on a missed foul ball, but it's now ruled a no-play. And outfielder Ryan McKenna no longer is charged with an error after missing Aaron Judge's fly ball in the first inning of Saturday afternoon's game.

Judge is awarded a double and Ellis no longer has five hitless innings.
