Game Preview
Orioles (44-61) at Detroit (55-49)
It was a promising start followed later by a deflating finish.
The Orioles took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first against Justin Verlander Monday night. But Detroit battled back to tie the game in the 5th and win it 6-5 on a Clete Thomas homer off Danys Baez in the last of the ninth.
That's how the Orioles began a four-game road series and seven-game road trip.
Tonight in game two at Detroit, Brian Matusz will make his Major League debut for the O's vs. Detroit's Jarrod Washburn (8-6, 2.64).
Matusz was officially added to the O's roster this afternoon and RHP Kam Mickolio was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk.
Matusz went 11-2, 1.91 in 19 starts in the minors this year between Frederick and Bowie. Washburn will make his first Detroit start after the Tigers acquired him last Thursday in a trade with Seattle.
Nine of the last 12 O's losses have been by one or two runs and the Orioles have now lost five straight one-run decisions.
The Orioles have lost four in a row, six of eight, 11 of 14 and 24 of their last 36 games.
They are just 4-13 since the All-Star break.
Over the last four games, the O's team ERA is 8.58. Orioles pitching has allowed at least one homer in seven consecutive games, giving up 15 total homers in that stretch.
The Tigers are leading the AL Central by two games over Chicago and by 3 ½ games over Minnesota.
Detroit, which is 3-5 over its last eight games and 7-10 in the second half, has the best home ERA in the Amercian League at 3.42.
Detroit is now 32-16 at home this season and 5-13 in games vs. AL East teams.
