Matusz with quality start, but not good enough (O's lose 4-2)

Today's attendance: 33,919. Brian Matusz has turned in a quality start today by definition. He allowed three earned runs over six innings. But he gave up four total, and the Orioles are losing 4-2, in the top of the seventh. Matusz has served up two home runs among his seven hits - solo shots by Billy Butler in the first and Jeff Francoeur leading off the top of the sixth that broke a 2-2 tie. Alcides Escobar singled with one out and scored on Humberto Quintero's two-out double. Darren O'Day was warming in the bullpen as Matusz labored in the sixth. Now it's Stu Pomeranz. Instant update: O'Day has replaced Matusz in the seventh. Matusz has registered his third consecutive quality start, but he wasn't particularly sharp today. He had one clean inning, when he induced two ground balls and struck out Mitch Maier in the fourth. He walked two batters in the fifth and fell behind in the sixth. Matusz has allowed more than one home run in only two starts this season. It hadn't occurred since April 15 at Toronto. Nick Johnson has struck out three times today. He's batting .186. Chris Davis has struck out twice and been hit by a pitch. Xavier Avery has a run-scoring single today, but he's in a 3-for-24 slump. Down on the farm, Brian Roberts is 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. That's his first hit since joining Double-A Bowie. Endy Chavez is 0-for-2 with a walk and run scored. Mark Reynolds is 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts. Roberts and Reynolds each made an outstanding play in the field, according to a Baysox tweet. Here's more from today's press conference for Adam Jones: Jones: "I definitely want to make a mark in this city as not just someone who's going to go out and play hard every day in the field, but in the community he's going to give his 100 percent to try to make a difference. If I'm able to help one kid get better at baseball, get better in school, get a job, do something positive, I think I've succeeded. And so far I've helped a couple hundred, and that's almost as fulfilling as playing Major League Baseball." Dan Duquette: "I don't think the way to build a team is through free agency. I think the way to build a team is through an organizational approach where you sign and develop good players and then you keep the best players on your team, like we're doing today. Adam's an important piece of a championship team because he's a dependable player, he provides speed and power in the middle of the lineup, he's a fixture in the community and he's a Gold Glove center fielder. And you can look around for these types of players, but they're very unique talents, and we're glad to have him in Baltimore." Duquette: "I think Adam's play in center field and at the plate has really paved the way for this type of contract. By being more selective at the plate, getting better pitches to hit, getting on base and producing more power and being consistent in center field. He has been producing at an elite level." Update II: The Orioles have lost five of their last seven games as they head to Toronto to begin a three-city road trip. They will no longer have the best record in the American League if Texas holds a 9-2 lead in the fifth inning. The Orioles are now 22-3 when they get a quality start. They're 0-1 after an Adam Jones press conference.
