The nation's capital is the site for the majors' marquee pitching matchup tonight as a couple heavyweight right-handers are set to face off. The Nationals send Max Scherzer to the mound while the Marlins counter with Jose Fernandez.
After struggling uncharacteristically for much of the second half of the season, Scherzer experienced his best start of the past three months in a 5-0 win in Miami last Sunday. Scherzer tossed eight scoreless innings in the victory, striking out six while refusing to walk a batter for the 13th start this season.
Scherzer is 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA in four starts against the Fish this year.
Meanwhile, Fernandez returned from the disabled list last Saturday, limiting the Nats to two hits while fanning seven over five shutout innings to claim his fifth win of the season.
Fernandez is 3-0 with a 0.58 ERA in five career starts against the Nats, but this will be the 23-year-old's first time taking the mound in the D.C.
Anthony Rendon collected one of the two hits Fernandez yielded six days ago. Rendon has hit safely in 23 of his last 25 games, slashing .356/.432/.510 with four homers, four doubles, 12 walks and 25 runs scored over the stretch.
Clint Robinson makes his seventh straight start at first base as Ryan Zimmerman continues battling a strained left oblique. The 30-year-old rookie is batting .324 (11-for-34) with a double, six walks and six RBIs in 12 games this month.
