Mets and Wright hammer out early lead (Nats fall 6-1)

Well, apparently the Mets aren't too excited, or distracted, by Jayson Werth Garden Gnome Night. At least in their first at-bat. In the first inning with one out against left-hander Gio Gonzalez, Daniel Murphy tripled down the right field line. He came home on a single by David Wright, and the Mets led 1-0. Right-hander Zack Wheeler, who bats left-handed, got the Nationals in order in the bottom of the first. The Nationals are 5-1 against the Mets this season. Counting tonight, they have 13 games remaining against New York until September 25. Gonzalez is 6-2 in 10 starts over 58 innings against the Mets with a 3.10 ERA. He is, however, only 1-2 at home against New York. The Mets lead 1-0 at the end of one inning. Update: The Mets came out hitting against Gonzalez again in the second. Travis d'Arnaud doubled and two outs later, he came home on a Wheeler bloop single. The Mets lead 2-0. Update II: The Nationals loaded the bases on walks by Wheeler in the second. Adam LaRoche scored on a wild pitch and the Mets were up 2-1. Jose Lobaton's grounder to short hit Asdrubal Cabrera, so he was ruled out and the putout was credited to the shortstop. With two outs, Gonzalez flew out to center field to end the threat. The Mets lead 2-1 after two innings. Update III: A thrilling moment in the game happened in the bottom of the sixth for the Nationals as they searched for the equalizer. Werth doubled to lead off the inning. LaRoche singled to left field. On the play, Werth tried to score, but was tagged out as he crossed home plate on a great throw from left fielder Eric Campbell to catcher d'Arnaud. There was a crew chief challenge to review the play, but the call was upheld. The game delay was approximately one minute and 22 seconds. The Nationals were not charged with a challenge. The Mets lead the Nationals 2-1 after six innings. Update IV: The Mets tacked on three runs in the seventh, chasing Gonzalez. Murphy with a two-run single off of Drew Storen and the Mets lead 4-1. Lucas Duda added a RBI single and it was 5-1 Mets. The Nationals have allowed three runs in the seventh inning for the second consecutive game. Gonzalez finished six innings plus two batters, allowing six hits, four runs, all earned, two walks and struck out six. He tossed 89 pitches, 58 for strikes. Update V: The last two games the Nationals have given up a lot of runs in the late innings. The Mets tallied another run in the eighth on a Kirk Nieuwenhuis RBI single to give the Mets a 6-1 lead. The inning showcased another outstanding outfield assist by Werth who gunned down Chris Young trying to score from third. It was his seventh outfield assist of the season and 80th of his career. Update VI: The Nats fell to the Mets with a final score of 6-1. The Nats are now 60-51 on the season. Gonzalez was tagged with his eighth loss this year.
