More on the call-ups, Pearce and the taxi squad

The Orioles added to their roster today by recalling reliever Evan Meek and purchasing left-hander Joe Saunders' contract from Triple-A Norfolk. They're not finished. The Orioles will recall reliever Ryan Webb on Tuesday if his right shoulder passes today's test at Norfolk. Webb hasn't pitched since Aug. 27 due to tenderness in the shoulder and the Orioles want him to work an inning this afternoon. If Webb isn't completely healthy, the Orioles will put him on the taxi squad in Sarasota. Webb was 3-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 42 appearances with the Orioles before they optioned him on Aug. 3. He's 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 11 games with Norfolk, with 13 hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings. mcfarland-sets-white-sidebar.jpgThe Orioles also will officially recall left-hander T.J. McFarland and catcher Steve Clevenger on Tuesday. McFarland is in the clubhouse today. The Orioles could add another position player, as well. Meek will report before today's game. The Orioles were going to wait until Tuesday, but manager Buck Showalter had to dig deeper into his bullpen yesterday than he intended after they built an 11-2 lead. Showalter said first baseman Steve Pearce, sidelined with a strained abdominal muscle, is feeling much better and the Orioles could do "a test run" during this week's series against the Reds. Saunders has been converted to a reliever, but Showalter said the left-hander presents himself as an option when the Orioles need a sixth starter following the Sept. 12 doubleheader against the Yankees at Camden Yards. It's conceivable that the Orioles could insert someone new in the rotation on that date, but they're off the previous day. The following players will report to the Sarasota camp on Friday, with workouts beginning the next day: Dariel Alvarez, Buck Britton, Michael Ohlman, Henry Urrutia, Christian Walker, Brian Ward, Oliver Drake, Eddie Gamboa, Preston Guilmet, Brock Huntzinger, Chris Jones, Tyler Wilson and Mike Wright.
