More on the roster and rotation (O's win 3-2 in 10th)

With Matt Wieters back in the lineup and Darren O'Day back in the bullpen, the Orioles' roster intrigue shifts to outfielder Hyun Soo Kim and pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.

Do the Orioles option Dariel Alvarez to Triple-A Norfolk to make room for Kim, who's expected to come off the disabled list Tuesday? They'd be replacing a right-handed hitter with a left-hander, but Julio Borbon has a similar skill set to Joey Rickard, who's on the disabled list with a thumb injury and isn't expected back before September.

How do the Orioles make room for Jimenez, who's coming off the paternity list Tuesday? They could option Tyler Wilson to Norfolk unless they want to keep him as a candidate to start Thursday in Minnesota or serve as a long reliever.

Jimenez left the team Saturday to be with his wife for the birth of their baby.

"Ubaldo will be back tomorrow," said manager Buck Showalter. "Heard from him. It's good to hear. Respecting his privacy and his wife's, their new addition. So we'll have to subtract somebody tomorrow."

Make it two subtractions with Kim likely to return. He's playing again tonight at Double-A Bowie after facing left-handed knuckleballer Josh Turley yesterday.

Hyun-Soo-Kim-orange-swing-sidebar.jpg"I can't wait to talk to Kim, when he found out," Showalter said. "You all remember here with a knuckleballer we faced, he had never seen one before in his career, and he wasn't too happy about it. He wasn't too happy yesterday either, I bet. Anyway, he'll play tonight over there and we'll see where we are.

"See how he feels at the plate, see what the people say over there who have seen him before and know what it looks like. I'm hoping we can activate him tomorrow, but if we don't and if we feel like he needs another day or two ... We're kind of leaning on him a little bit, too."

As I wrote in my last entry, Jimenez is a candidate to start Thursday's makeup game in Minnesota because of his career numbers versus the Twins and at Target Field, and Showalter's preference to push back Kevin Gausman one day. He also could adjust Dylan Bundy's schedule with the Aug. 1 off-day.

"The game in Minnesota, we're contemplating what we're going to do there for that game, whether we're going to stay in turn or move some things around trying to get to that off-day on the first, which is the first one for our club in quite a while, having to play this makeup game in Minnesota," Showalter said.

"We're going to have to kind of wait and see how we get through the next couple of days before we commit to Thursday. See where Ubaldo fits in when he gets back tomorrow. We've been looking at a lot of stuff matchup-wise, ballpark, different things, trying to see if there's a good way to go forward here. We're trying to accomplish some things with a couple of young pitchers, if we want to give them an extra day or not."

Jimenez hasn't pitched since July 8, but he's been throwing on the side. Just not always in view of fans and the media.

"It might actually be good for him. Who knows?" Showalter said.

"There's two ways to look at it. It might be a nice little freshen up, kind of get away from things. He's been throwing. Sometimes, he doesn't get into a game, he stays down there and Wally (Dave Wallace) as soon as the game's over goes down to the bullpen and they throw.

"We'll see if he's a candidate for a start here shortly."

Wieters is catching for the first time in a week. His schedule won't be adjusted despite the time off.

"He was catching very similar to the way we'd use him when he was 100 percent three years ago with the day games and what have you," Showalter said. "It's yet to be seen how he's going to respond to that today, see how he feels tomorrow. We'll take it each day as it comes. Even though he's had some days off, it doesn't mean he's not ...

"I try to have a lot of respect about how challenging that position is, especially this time of year with the heat and everything. What Caleb (Joseph) did yesterday after a night game and in that weather ... But I can't tell you how big it was for our team yesterday for Vance (Worley) to throw strikes and work fast and get us on and off the field. And for the media, too, I'm sure. And for the umpires.

"Matt, we'll take each day as it comes and see how it goes. Just hope he doesn't have any issues tonight. I think we've waited the right amount of time."
