More notes and quotes before tonight's game

The Orioles won't announce their roster move today until making certain that knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa arrives in Baltimore.

Gamboa would be making his major league debut if he gets into a game.

The Orioles want left-hander T.J. McFarland to make at least a couple of starts at Triple-A Norfolk. He's on the mound tonight in Charlotte.

Gamboa was scheduled to start Monday for the Tides, which remains a possibility if outfielder David Lough is ready to come off the disabled list.

Mike Wright's fastball topped out at 99 mph last night. Too bad we can't experience a Wright-for-Wright transaction.

Left-hander Tim Berry pitched last night for Double-A Bowie, which also removed him from consideration. And the Orioles don't want to rush Dylan Bundy to the majors in April.

Lough worked out with the Orioles today and will play left or center field and bat leadoff Sunday at Single-A Frederick. Lough could stay for a second game on Monday. That's to be determined.

"We would like to get him in some regular games, especially in this weather and make sure the leg's OK," said manager Buck Showalter. "But all indications are that he's ready to go."

Wesley Wright is going on the DL with pain behind his left shoulder and in his neck that's apparently related to his trapezius muscle.

"We're going to try to clear this up with a DL stint," Showalter said. "We haven't really gotten into what's next, MRI or whatever they're going to do yet.

"I thought that's where it would head last night. He came in today and was about the same."

The Orioles can't estimate how long Wright, signed to a one-year, $1.7 million contract, will remain on the DL. He's likely to undergo an MRI, which could provide some clarity to his situation.

"I feel about the same as yesterday," Wright said before Showalter announced that the left-hander was going on the DL. "I just got finished getting a little treatment. Nothing really to update yet. Just see what the doc says and go from there, but I feel about the same as yesterday when I left. Just get some treatment and try to loosen things up back there. I'm hoping it's something that can get taken care of kind of quickly and I can get back on the field soon.

"I guess it could be worse. It wasn't worse, so I'll take that aspect of it, but I knew the way I felt yesterday that it was going to take something dramatic for me to feel a lot better this morning. When I woke up, I felt basically the same as when I left here."

Wesley Wright Opening Day.pngWright hasn't been on the DL since 2009 with the Astros, when he missed 19 games with a strained left shoulder.

"I'm not really sure what to do with myself, to be honest," he said. "I'm the type of guy who likes to be out there playing and be with my teammates on a day-to-day basis, so for me to go to the training room was something that was killing me to the point where I couldn't go out there.

"It was definitely disappointing. You start a season with a new team, you want to be out there with your guys, but hopefully I get it taken care of and I'll be back out there sooner than later."

The Orioles chose to bring up a pitcher instead of a position player following starter Bud Norris' abbreviated start yesterday. The last six innings were covered by the bullpen.

"It works the best as far as the least disruption down there (at Norfolk) and also a guy who's equipped to go the longest," Showalter said. "We could have waited. I'd like to see David get a couple at-bats. And if we get into a 14-inning game tonight, 15 innings, we'll be real glad we brought (Gamboa), so we're going to err on that side."

Gamboa and Kevin Gausman could pitch in long relief if Ubaldo Jimenez is knocked out early tonight.

Infielder Jimmy Paredes could report to Single-A Frederick for a rehab assignment if his back responds favorably next week. He's scheduled to play Monday in Fort Myers.

"He feels good," Showalter said. "He did all baseball activities the last day or so."
