Morning notes from camp (Yoon update)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are expected to announce the signing of Korean pitcher Suk-min Yoon later today. A press conference wouldn't be scheduled before Tuesday. The Orioles also will announce a corresponding 40-man roster move. Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez will play catch this morning and hopes to throw his bullpen session on Tuesday. Gonzalez's lower back tightened Saturday during a rundown drill and the Orioles skipped his scheduled session the following day. "I'm a lot better, looser," he said this morning. "Just when I wake up in the morning, it's a little tight. But once I get going walking around, it feels a lot better." Gonzalez will stretch this morning before playing catch. He won't participate in the charity golf outing this afternoon. "I was actually looking forward to that, but it's not going to happen," he said. "I've got to wait until next year again." Infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. reported to camp this morning. I omitted Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar on yesterday's list of position players who haven't shown up. The first full-squad workout takes place on Wednesday. Dylan Bundy will take off today and Tuesday before throwing again from 150 feet, as he did for the first time yesterday. He also expects to throw from that distance on Friday. Bundy could take off during the weekend and expand the flat ground distance to 180 feet on Monday. Pitchers scheduled to throw in the bullpen today include Tommy Hunter, Bud Norris, Darren O'Day, Evan Meek, Troy Patton, Ryan Webb, Brad Brach, Zach Britton, Wei-Yin Chen, Tim Alderson, Brock Huntzinger, T.J. McFarland, Nick Additon and Tim Berry. Baltimore native Steve Clevenger caught Eddie Gamboa's knuckleball yesterday. They were teammates at Triple-A Norfolk last season, but Chris Snyder always caught Gamboa. "I wanted to catch him, so I kind of volunteered myself into it," said Clevenger, who previously has caught Cubs minor league knuckleballer Joseph Zeller. "They're difficult to catch. The better knuckleball you have, the catcher isn't going to catch it. That's obviously what you want. But it was a good opportunity to get in there and see what Eddie can do with his knuckleball. "It was pretty good, actually. Thew a couple that were so-so, but the majority of them were pretty good." Knuckleball pitchers usually have their own personal catchers. If Gamboa reaches the majors and Clevenger is comfortable behind the plate, they could be a match. "You can work your way in there that way, too," Clevenger said, smiling. "It's good to get the experience behind the plate with him and build a relationship with him. It's important. If he comes up, you're going to have to have a guy to catch him. If you can't catch him, then you won't be his personal guy." Evan Meek is trying to win a bullpen spot as a non-roster invitee to camp. The Orioles worked him out at Camden Yards during FanFest, with pitching coach Dave Wallace and bullpen coach Dom Chiti in attendance, and signed him to a minor league deal. Meek was an All-Star with the Pirates in 2010, when he posted a 2.14 ERA in 70 games, but shoulder injuries derailed his career. "It's been tough," he said. "Anytime you get hurt and you're trying to get back to where you were at, it takes time. Some guys heal faster than others. I'm just happy to be healthy now. "Last year with Texas in Triple-A, I started for a while and that really got me some good consistency back. And being here now, you take things as they come and you try to do the best you can to get back to where you were. Keep fighting." Update: The Orioles will announce the Yoon signing later this afternoon. There will be a press conference tomorrow at noon to introduce Yoon.
