Nationals place Strasburg on DL, recall Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse

The Washington Nationals placed right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 1, with a right latissimus dorsi strain and recalled left-handed pitcher Xavier Cedeno from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Cedeno - who did not pitch during a one-day stint with Washington earlier this season - made five relief appearances with an 11.37 ERA for Houston in '13, before he was acquired by the Nationals via waivers on April 23. The 26-year-old went 1-0 with a 2.63 ERA and 13.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (20 K/13.2 IP) in 14 relief appearances this season with Syracuse. In 44 relief appearances with the Astros in 2012, Cedeno was 0-1 with six holds, one save and a 3.77 ERA, while posting a .213 (13-for-61) BAA facing left-handed batters. He is 0-1 with six holds, one save and a 6.00 ERA in 52 career relief appearances during three seasons (2011-13) in the big leagues. Strasburg, 24, is 3-5 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 starts this season with Washington.
