ST. LOUIS - The Nationals have reinstated second baseman Dan Uggla, selected the contract of catcher Pedro Severino from Double-A Harrisburg and recalled left-hander Sammy Solis from Triple-A Syracuse. To make room for Severino on the 40-man roster, right-hander David Carpenter was put on the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.
Uggla returns to the Nats after missing 22 games with back spasms. He played in seven rehab assignment games with Harrisburg, hitting .217 (5-for-23) with a double, a home run, two walks, six RBIs and five runs scored. Uggla is slashing .191/.294/.291 with four doubles, two triples, a homer, 16 walks and 14 RBIs in 56 games (21 starts) with the Nationals.
Severino, 22, joins the Nats for his first big league assignment of his career. The catcher was signed by Washington at 17 years old and entered this season as the Nats' top defensive catcher prospect, according to Baseball America. He has thrown out 38 percent of attempted basestealers over 331 minor league games. Severino was batting .249 with 13 doubles, five longballs, 19 walks and 34 RBIs in 90 games with Harrisburg.
Solis returns to the Nationals bullpen for the fourth time this season after posting a 2.03 ERA in nine games with Syracuse. The southpaw is 0-3 with a 4.39 ERA in 20 minor league games across Double-A and Triple-A, and is 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA in 10 appearances with the Nationals. Since returning to the minors on July 30, Solis allowed just three earned runs over 13 1/2 innings while earning two saves and holding opponents to a .178 batting average with Syracuse.
