No-hit into the sixth, O's fall 1-0 to Boston

There were moments tonight when it looked like Chris Tillman would get rocked. There were moments when it looked like the Orioles would get no-hit. Neither happened, but the Birds did fail to score and lost a 1-0 game to Boston in front of 24,184 fans. Those that made it to the end had to wait out two rain delays. The game was halted twice in the second inning, the first delay was just 15 minutes, but the second was one hour and 18 minutes. Boston starter Brandon Workman took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when it ended on Ryan Flaherty's two-out single. But he went 6 2/3 frames giving up just that one hit to improve to 1-0 with an ERA of 2.86. Workman has now pitched 10 2/3 career scoreless innings against the Orioles. Former Oriole Koji Uehara pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 13 chances. Tillman had an effective outing tonight, even though it sure had its rocky moments. Over six innings he gave up seven hits and one run with three walks and strikeouts. Boston's only run off Tillman came on a two-out, RBI single by Mike Napoli in the third. Over the second, third and fourth innings Tillman was in constant trouble, but Boston stranded seven runners. In the fourth, the Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs on three singles, but he fanned Brock Holt and got Xander Bogaerts to hit into a double play. Tillman had a 12.56 ERA over his previous four starts, so rocky moments or not, this was an improvement as his career ERA is now 2.76 in 14 starts against Boston. With this loss the Orioles are 12-10 in one-run games, 13-15 at home, 4-5 versus Boston, and 32-31 for the season. In the series finale on Wednesday night, Wei-Yin Chen (6-2, 4.13 ERA) pitches against right-hander Rubby De La Rosa (1-1, 2.84 ERA) at 7:05 p.m.
